1975 911S vs 1999 Techart Boxster
Before I got the 911 I had an opportunity to get from the same person same price a 99 Boxster. Here is the skinny,My 75 has had the engine upgrades with time-certs and race ware studs, carrera tensioner and oil cooler,bronze-phosphorus valve guides,40 ida webers,73 RS exhaust with SSI's,short shift kit, lightened flywheel and new gahn leather interior and paint that is about 9.5 out of ten.115 thousand miles. The boxster is a 1999 model with the Techart body kit and aftermarket 19 wheels and everything else is stock with 18 thousand miles.I know this is a 911 forum so votes will probably be skewed that way,but honestly what would you have got.

I love my old 911 but that boxster looks sweet. I would probly go with the boxster. I often find myself wishing I had the smoother ride, a/c, better sound system, etc that a newer model offers. Thats just personal for me..

I would go with the classic SOUL factor the Boxster just doesn't have it yet it will but not yet.
The 911 would be my choice

If the Boxster had a 2.7, it wouldn't even be close. I love my '73 911, but my '02 Boxster S is sweet to drive.

Man, personally I'd have your 911 any day. I wouldn't even have to think about it in fact.

dunno if I mentioned this in an Email, Brent, but I leased a Boxster S for a while (silver, red interior) at the same time I had the Gulf Blue '75 and the present '73.5 (red ext. at the time with a 2.7L CIS motor in it). I also had a MB ML430 to complete the German foursome...
The signal characteristic of the Boxster is that it is topless - that is fabulous in summer, not so much in winter. Also, it is so well done that there less drama even at higher cornering speeds. The old 911s let you KNOW you are driving. So it wasn't even close for me. I'd love to have a fleet tho. Also, I find the Boxster just too large (the masses of the curves are all filled out - even tho the length, width, ht. are all about the same as an old 911). I'd really like to have a car the size of th last Toyota MR2 but made as a Boxster. (and BTW, Honda is planning a much smaller roadster to replace the S2000)... The '75 tho it has Webers, does not have the hot cams that one can run with Webers. It still has the CIS cams in it. (Lee G. ran out of money...). If you did that you'd have to change out the pistons (for clearance) but you could make yourself one real hot motor. The other thing is that the '75 is heavier b/c of all the sound deadening Lee put in it. We talked about that, and I think it would be an enormous task to tear the entire car apart to remove all that. I'd say it should remain a cruiser. (And of course, that's a major reason why I sold it and began with the '73.) But to each his own. But there is no question in my min re the '75 vs. the Boxster. Unless you can keep both... |

I found the boxster probably handled slightly better, about the same power but felt less, less drama but still a fine driver.Of course it is newer so much quieter at cruising speed, much smoother as well but didn't garner near as much attention as the 75.I took the 75 to my first show and shine this past weekend with the local car club and had people swarming over the car.The local club is mostly muscle cars and modified hot rods so the Porsche really stood out.Although some of those muscle cars are real fine looking machines,I doubt any of them drive as nice as the Porsche, realizing that they are all pretty old machines.

Man from the rear the 911 just looks old! I think a used Boxster is an unbelievable value out there today. If you could fit two adults and a child in one, I would probably buy a Boxster.

updated looks, updated safety controls, smooth, no top, less dramatic - I would opt for the Boxter. If the car was a pre-74 the choice would be tougher.

I'm lucky enough to have a 74 911 and an 01 Boxster.
For everyday driving, I like the Boxster best. (my 911 has no AC) But, for fun spirited driving the 911 is hands down the winner. If I could only keep one, I'd probably keep the Boxster since it's more convenient, quieter, and much more comfortable. But I wouldn't be happy about not having the narrow body. ![]() Pat |

So I guess the question is, what do you want the car for? everyday driving, style, attention, or back roads balls to the wall fun racing.

I sold Pat S that Boxster, but don't think it was because I preferred my 911. Having said that, with the two examples you've given, I'd have gone with the 911. If you're looking at Boxsters, I'd go with a post Y2K car. And, as someone who's had to pay for a replacement motor in one of his '99s, I'd suggest avoiding any that are under 50k miles.
Edit: By the way, nice to see so much support for the Boxster. I wonder if we're finally past the "secretary's car" syndrome with the Boxster? Edit edit: Also, for the record, don't think that the Boxster is lacking in the fun department...they can be a real blast!

Dont get the boxster
Before you buy. Do your research.....The boxster is more likely to break and cost you more than the 911.
Dont get anything less than a 2000 Boxster S with the 3.2 in it. You will regret it. I have both....74 911 ( track car now ) and 2000 Boxster S...kinda everyday car. Both in really good shape...But you know what...I would drive the 74 across the United States before I would the Boxster... Sounds kinda weird I know. The Boxster has alot of weird history behind it, motor changes, brain boxes dying for some unknown reason etc... But a good 911 is just like a VW bug, its keeps going and going and going...and gets better gas mileage! Sometimes I drive the crap out of the 911 and it still comes home in one piece saying "WOW THAT WAS FUN".... Dont get me though, I love my Boxster, I got the GT3 front on it and it looks mean, drives great, handles even better and it comfortable, not to mention A/C and a great sound system....but I dread the day that it breaks...I hope it wont, I got the 3.2 because it had a better track record than the 2.5 and 2.7.... With the Boxster you are limited to what you can do with the car and upgrades... With the 911, possibilities are endless! Just my 2 cents...I felt qualified to answer because I currently own both..

I appreciate the Boxster for what it is, but for my first Porsche bought a 911. I see many women driving Boxsters, but I fell in love with the 911 a long time ago.
The Boxster surprised me - it is a large car. I prefer the narrrow bodystyle of the older 911s. All personal preference. All the best! Sharon

All depends what you want the car to do, what traffic/weather you drive in and how much weighting you place on refinement, comfort, safety, modern etc.
My daily driver is a '77. My local independant has 4 stripped Boxster motors on the bench and another in the stand right now. They don't really think a lot of them. Of course, they don't all break... ![]()
