Battery post position

When I did my alternator replacement, I noted that my battery posts are not necessarily in the orientation I would prefer. My posts are outboard (see picture) which is necessary because of the length of my negative ground strap. It won't reach if the battery is rotated the other way. My concern is the proximity of the positive post to the (grounded) sidewall of the car. I guess the other choice is for it to be nearer to the gas tank, which isn't exactly a prime choice either.

Which is correct?

Thanks,
Brian

Your pic is as the factory intended..but the factory also intended for the positive cable to be covered. Having it ( instead) nearer to the tank..and just as susceptable to grounding issues.... would ( IMHO) NOT be preferred !!

Thanks Wil

I'll figure out a method to shield the terminal.

It shouldn't be a big problem....your local auto parts store has these, usually sold in pairs ( red for positive...black for negative) for a few bucks. Negative cover is not important for a negative ground car..positive is.

I had the same issue with my battery so I replaced it with a battery with the terminals opposite so that I could spin the battery around whereas the terminals were closer to the tank and away from the wall. I then covered it with a thin sheet of plastic.

The Optima battery for our cars places the posts in a more "friendly" place...

Why not just replace the ground cable. Very cheap fix. Once you have the battery out, it's a 1 on a scale of 1-10 in difficulty. Get the fattest one you can find.
