Group 48 battery with longest warranty
My last AGM, Yellow Top Optima crapped the bed right at 36 months. So SOL on warranty. The prior one went 15 years. So if ya average it I did fine. But I still be irked.
What AGM brand out there has the CURRENT best reputation? Prefer it to be under $300. I know it isn't Optima. I'll never buy from them again.

Well. I have an autozone platinum agm that is coming up on 4yrs now and it’s fine. I do use a tender. So far so good. I also have one of these in h8 size in my cayenne that has been great. Batteries are both made in Germany. And relabeled az platinum.
I believe group 48 is same as h6. I have h6 in my 89 g50 I am not a big fan of optima or odyssey. Had poor luck in past. |

JB,
I am also looking around for a better battery option when I get to that point with our 78 SC. I found good info on possible options on this thread, so you might want to take a look if you haven’t done so. I really like Interstate too. Perfect size, fits without adapter. Not expensive, lasts as long as anything else out there.

Optima
I also had an Optima “die” after 3 years, spent double over a conventional lead acid type for 1/3 of the life - Never again!
My original M3 battery lasted 13 years... |

You could look at Varta car batteries.
Panasonic were excellent but the tsunami wiped out the factory and they can only make enough for their own domestic requirements. |

Gonna 'follow' this JB - I too got an optima and it seemed to reach the end of its life at little earlier than I expected.
To be fair, I'd gotten lazy with the tender and I had unintentionally reduced driving time - seems to be hanging in now, but there'll come a day...

I run a group 48 Interstate in two of my four P cars. Great luck with them.
My new to me 88 911 has this battery. Question; How are you guys venting? I have AC and I am having trouble running the vent tube down the rubber drain hole.

There have been lots of posts about Odyssey (PC 925 or PC 680), and success looks pretty good (but not in all cases). I was considering that for my switch away from the group 49 behemoth...

USA AGM batteries are now made by only 3 companies....Johnson Controls, which makes Optima, Interstate and supplies more than half of the market; Exide; and East Penn.
Optima quality is not the same as the original Pre Johnson Controls takeover...so nothing really special about them now. I have had really good luck with Bosch Platinum AGM (Exide) sold through Pepboys and have them in all 3 of my "extreme heat" AZ cars... - 4 year "Free Replacement" warranty - Under $200 Last edited by sc; 02-11-2019 at 09:38 AM.. |

What happened to Douglass Batteries, they used to be a big player. If you are looking for a warranty than the Bosch 4 year free replacement above sounds like the ticket. Most battery warranties are prorated and after 4 years have little residual value.
Just replaced my 8 year old Walmart Everstart this month but it spent a lot of time on the tender.

I don’t know if it’s cheaper materials, but all batteries seem to die sooner than they did. A yellow top Optima is not really designed as a starting battery, but should still last. After my experiences with aoptimas not lasting, I went back the the basic Interstate brand. Hopefully time will show if the newer technology batteries will last longer!

Have grp 48 Interstate AGM in the 88 a few years now. Perfect so far. Replaced lead/acid grp 49 interstate that was in the car over 12 years. Worked but getting weak. I'm a fan of Interstate.

The Varta batteries mentioned above are made in Germany, and made to last.
They OEM batteries for various German made cars. |

Add NorthStar to the list. Very similar to Odyssey. I've been using them for a few years and have been happy. They are a very good quality battery.

I currently have a odysey 48-720 in my basket with a coupon that expresses at the end of the month.
Pep boys cannot get the bosch agm , only the champion . This is 100 cheaper than the odyssey . Has anybody ever used the champion agm ? |

Found this in a google search - from2011 — Most auto batteries are made by just three manufacturers, Delphi, Exide, and Johnson Controls Industries. Each makes batteries sold under several different brand names. Delphi makes ACDelco and some EverStart (Wal-Mart) models. Exide makes Champion, Exide, Napa, and some EverStart batteries. Johnson Controls makes Diehard (Sears), Duralast (AutoZone), Interstate, Kirkland (Costco), Motorcraft (Ford), and some EverStarts.
Champion (and Bosch) = exide? Last edited by darrin; 02-17-2019 at 06:52 AM.. |

I traded in the non-AGM H8 Autocraft battery the PO had in my car that had lasted more than 10yrs for a Autocraft H6 AGM and my total was $110 at Advanced Auto Parts. This was far lowered than what is on their website and I verified the battery manufacture date was only a couple of months old and checked its charged state % in store before I purchased. It fit the mounting bracket perfectly moving it up to the shorter predrilled mounting hole. I'm fine with 760 CCA vs 900 CCAs. I dont know why the price was that low, I checked the receipt listed the correct battery. I can only assume they get some backend deal on the trade in some how?
I'm happy so far.
