Intermittent no start
Tried several searches and couldn't turn up anything on this.
My '81 SC runs great but every once in a while, when I turn the ignition key, I hear the fuel pump run normally, then when turned to start nothing happens. Twisting the key back, then to start again and it turns over and jumps to life normally. The previous owner had the ignition switch replaced, I believe because it was just worn out. Is there a common relay that gets flakey? Is there known problems with the starter solenoids? The car has 144K. Naturally I'm concerned that at some point it won't start... thanks, mike |
happened to me, same thing, but more frequently when hot. Starter had to be replaced, I purchased the hi-torque from our host. It's a very nice part.

Thanks, that's what I'm afraid of. Of course the next question is how difficult a job is it to replace?

Do you have a burglar alarm that is failing? My "intermittent no-start" problem was caused by an old derelict alarm that was wired into the fuel pump and ignition circuit...very frustrating!

No alarm on this car. Does anyone know if the starter solenoid can be replaced?

I bought a VW solenoid for $25. Problem solved. Go to a starter rebuilder, they will likely have it in stock.
Connect a trouble light to the solenoid. If it turns on with the key you know the problem is in the starter, otherwise it is likely a bad key switch. |
