Charging Challenge

Dear Wizards,

I am currently chasing one of the more vexing problems I have ever encountered on an early car. A week ago, the generator light failed to go out once the car started. I checked voltage and it was flat when off or running which indicated to me that the alternator was chief suspect. I did the usual dance of cleaning ground points, dismantling the battery terminals, etc to no avail. I checked the actual light in the instrument panel and it seems to be functioning normally. I got a reconditioned alternator unit from a recommended source, and after installation, the situation was the same. Although it was not overcharging, I swapped the regulator with a unit from my other early car which was known working. No change.

I did not find anything directly related in the archives. Before I assume that I have a bad rebuilt unit, what else should I check that might cause the symptoms ? TIA

ps: One strange item I found along the way is that the hazard light switch will cause all of the instruments to momentarily come to life when it is held in. This happens even when the relay is removed from the car and the ignition is off. The turn signals work, but the hazards have not for a few years so this is not a new condition.

The culprit is in the attached picture. It is in-line before the regulator. I assumed it was just a noise suppression device, but once by-passed, everything works as it should. I've been unable to find anything on the part number stamped on it 0290002011. Since I'm not sure of its' function, I don't want to just run the car without it. Any clues ?

VDM radio noise supressor. Give it the "water test"- throw it into a convenient lake or stream and if it floats, re-use it.

For all those Sierra Clubbers out there, a garbage can can be substituted for a mountain lake.

Thanks, I suspected as much. I now believe my alternator and regulator were ok all along. A few more gray hairs, a little more pcar wisdom.......
