Ok, I'm a dipstick . . .

Here's a stupid question I've been wanting to ask for awhile: On my 3.2, when I look at the dipstick it always reads less on the underside (the side with the hash marks). For instance, right now, the top side of the dipstick shows 1/2, while the bottom shows 1/4. I figure the answer is to only pay attention to the side with the hash marks, but I had to ask. Oh, and don't tell me to only check the oil when the engine is at normal operating temperature!

Thanks.

Take your reading on the side with the markings.

I cannot say this enough times,.....the car MUST be hot, idling for 3 minutes, and on totally level ground.

You cannot believe how many cars I see that have been accidently overfilled with oil by ignoring the above steps,...

How about: make sure the engine is running.
