Mine was the same. It turned out to be the sending unit. Very easy fix. A couple of shops tried to convince me that the speedo was bad...not.

sooo....how do i fix it?

I highly recommend Bentley's Repair Manual for the 911. I believe Pelican carries it or you can get one at Amazon.com. I can't imagine owning an older 911 without it. Well worth the 100 bucks or so. It will show you how.
Also, you can look up "sending unit" for your year car and view the part and description on this site. It is a simple plug-in deal. |
Make sure you check your grounds and battery connections. Simple to do and may solve your problem. Did for me. Good luck.

The first thing to do is pull the speedo out of the dash and make sure you have 12 volts with the key on at the + and - terminals on the speedo.
If you have 12 volts then you need to check your sender, heres how you do it. Disconnect the wire going to the 31b terminal, hook a multimeter set to the lowest ohm setting between the wire that was on the 31b terminal and the - terminal. Start the car and back it up or move it forward, you should see 8 closures for each revolution of the rear wheels. Let us know what happens. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1184104612.jpg |
