how much does it weigh?

I was considering pulling the rear carpet up and seat and removing all that nasty brown insulation underneath that and the rear shelf. whats that stuff weigh? Gotta be worth something .. but with that removed how much louder will it be inside?

Porsche Crest How Much????

Hey Ben,

Believe it or not....

That stuff weighs between 40-45lbs.
I could not believe it myself.
My example was a 79 930.
So any SC...or 84-89 Carrera should be the same.

However, on the advice of Jeff Erickson (AASE Motors, Fullerton CA), I put the insulation back in. He informed me...the weight savings would not be worth the BIG increase in noise for a STREET car. However...on a track car....it makes great sense.

Hey....BTW...I received the insert for my M & K...
It did help.

Thanks...

Paul

'79 here and same weight drop, 40/45 lb. A lot more noise. But a new engine sound pad from Pelican will cut most of it. Dyna mat the interior if required for less than 10# and less noise than the original version. Some have used the sound reduction paint to good effect as well.

I just removed the sound deadening material from the back deck and the seats....all total it weighed approx 45pds...plus I removed the back seats which was another 10.....to be honest the increase in sound from the engine is not much....plus who wouldn't want to hear it!

45 pds on its own will not make much difference in terms of performance but if you are stripping out other things...it is a big part of lightening the car.

Mine is gone, along with the sound pad. I don't think the car is too noisy, but it's not my daily driver. The car has no radio, so the engine is all there is to listen to.

My goal was to lighten the car as much as possible while still haveing it look stock.

remove doorskin hardware, buy an M&K muffler it is very light, buy headers (if you don't need heat) , remove AC, remove heater blower motor, remove carpet backing, remove sound deading material on floor and under car, light seats, fibergalss bumpers, hollow torsion bars, remove rear seats and sound deadening....there is more but after the big stuff it gets expensive. I probably missed stuff but that's my list

I'm sorry I wasn't clear... I've already done a bunch of that stuff Joe, I was asking specifically about removing & cleanup of the insulation stuff.

Adding a set of lwt race buckets, deleting the sound pad and rear seats can net you a 100# loss if you are careful buying and selecting the hardware for installing the new seats.

That pad is coming out of my car. Ounces add to pounds. 45 lbs is large! I am not afraid of the sound of my engine. My car has a radio, but it gets used almost never.

??

On a 1977 911, the rear carpet + seat + all the brown insulation underneath the seat and rear shelf area = 30 lbs. ?

Or is it some subset of that?

In my car there was a big "rubber" sound matt that was molded to shape of the rear section of the car in addition to everything else you have mentioned Randy and the rear seat belts.

Just poking fun here. I'm pretty sure Ben has an M&K.

yeah I have this M&K setup so 30lbs drop makes up for the extra weight
