Regulator Alternator Question

I have read for several hours on regulators and alternators.

My car is a 1970 911T and the alternator doesn't appear to be charging at idle and once it gets to 3000 rpm it will charge at about 12.8 to 13.2

I wanted to test the regulator before taking the alternator out. I have checked and tested all grounds on the car.

My confusion is that the regulator has 2 strange "caps" or "tubes" connected to it. What do they do and can I test those or bypass them to make sure it doesn't have anything to do with the problem.

I don't drive my car much and If it does turn out to be the alternator I will probably get it rebuilt. I am trying to make the car as original as possible.

I have attached a picture of the regulator and "caps"....it does say SEV Marchal on the regulator piece.

Thanks for any info.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1184206807.jpg

Look like condensors to me, the kind you would find on a distributor to prevent arcing between the points.

Those are noise supressors, basically caps designed to filter out the AC ripple. Make careful note of how they are connected, and then connect the Black, Blue and Brown wires from the alternator directly to the DF, D+/61 and D- terminals on the VR. Simple.
