Looking for my dad's '86 911 (DC area?)

Yeah, I know, this is a long shot but I'm curious if anyone knows where this car is. I wish I had the VIN, but unfortunately, I don't.

After my dad died in '02, his 911 ended up being left in my care for the next two or so years. My stepmom eventually sold it (I believe to another Porsche guy or mechanic in Maryland) in late '04 or early '05. It's a metallic Garnet Red, which is a pretty rare color for that car (I've only ever seen one other Garnet Red 911 in person so if you have seen one it may be the one I'm looking for!). When it was sold, the paint was getting a little long in the tooth. It had a fair number of DC parking scars, stone chips and the clear coat was beginning to flake. Other identifying marks are that the last foot or so of the driver's side running board was a bit squished (as seen in the pictures) and the center console had about a 2-3 inch wear mark put in by his cast when he broke his foot. (Still drove the car, tho!) Also, the transmission was a bit out of adjustment from the short shift kit and getting out of 5th gear sometimes required a little extra work.

Pics are available here.

I'm not searching to buy it back since I really don't have the money to do it without some stupid financial moves, and I think my dad would come back and haunt me if I did that. I'm just curious as to where it is.

Thanks,
BB.

Hopefully you can find it here! Did you try NoVa or Rennlist too? It's a pitty that you don't have the VIN.

Oh yeah, glad to see you here on Pelican. How long have you had your 944? (if you click on the links in my sig, you should remember my Miata from miata.net)

Later,
Mike

Hi Mike,

Yeah, I've tried the local forums and also Rennlist. I'll bug my stepmom and see if she's got the VIN somewhere (I did this on a whim) but there's no guarantee. It was suggested that we contact the insurance, which may be a good lead.

I recognize the Miata, but what's your username over there?

Anyway, I've had the 944 for seven years now.

BB.

If you have a picture with the old plate you might be able to get the VIN through the DMV, then see if that VIN shows up as registered in the same state. Not sure how easy this would be, but it is worth a phone call or two.

I agree with Tony. You may be able to track it through the plate number. I don't know how difficult that would be now though. Heightened security EVERYWHERE...

My screenname is similar - instead of 911 in SC, it's Miata in SC. I've only had my 911 a little over a year now.

I have been doing the exact opposite - I've been trying to track the POs. Of course, I know who the PO was before me, and I know the name of the PO before that. I haven't been able to contact him at all though. I'd love to know the history of my car since it is an RoW. I have the paper trail, but that's it so far. Maybe one day...

Good luck. I'm sure you'll be able to track down the new owner.

I have the plate info, so I'll see if I can track down the VIN between that, and maybe my stepmom has the information somewhere as well.

Thanks for the help!

Mike: see ya on the Miata forum!

Check with the repair shop(s) who last worked on the car. They generally will have the vin listed on a invoice or on file. Good luck with your search.
