Collapsible Spare Tire
Question for everyone - it is clear to me that by collapsible spare has never been used (it still has the little rubber spikes on the face of the tire). I've never "test" inflated it - should I? And if I do, how hard is it to deflate the tire when used?
I purchased an aftermarket compressor (original one gone with toolkit, I'd guess). How long to inflate? Thanks, Brian |

Brian,
I wouldn't! It might not re-collapse to the original size!

The tire will collapse to the original shape. I have tested 3 collapsible tires and all returned to the original shape. No problem to do this.

Mine re-compresses fine, and indeed needed to be tested. No use having a safety instrument if its not reliable.

We had to use one of our 86's spares last November. Kept fingers crossed, took it app. 10 min. to fully inflate. And yes, it collapsed back to the original size/shape when we finally let the air back out. Great design.

What is the correct way to collapse? I tried collapsing mine by letting all the air out through the valve stem and the outside (the side that has the valve stem) collapses fine but the inside (side that butts up against the hub) doesn't collapse completely.
I've noticed that there are two stems....one is the normal valve stem and the other is slightly smaller.....is this second stem used in collapsing? |

The white plastic valve opens to let the air out. It's very easy to use the collapsible spare tire.

Tell us more about that Fuchs! Is it special? It would sure be lighter than the boat anchor that Porsche supplied. Obviously looks better.

It is a regular 15x6 Fuchs, the tire was dismounted from a regular steel spare wheel and mounted to the Fuchs wheel. No big deal.

Spare on the Fuchs
That collapesible spare on the Fuchs is just so cool. I've seen this a few times and have been wow'ed by it each time.

Can someone tell me where to get the 2 -stem valve ( on the regular spare) and whether it can be mounted on the Fuchs?
I posted before how one can find the spare- rubber from a 964 or 993 ( 16") and marry this to 6 x 16" Fuchs. Stamped steel wheel for mid 80's cars... and the Fuchs alternate here are 15". Do a search. - Wil

If your regular stock collapsible spare is 15" and you upsize to a 16" from a 993, will the collapsed spare fit into your spare tire well? It's a pretty snug fit already in there with the 15" wheel.
I have bought spare collapsible tires from swap meets in Pomona, Hayward, etc. I think I must have maybe 3 spares at the moment. They all have the 2 stem valve. I imagine you can get them from EASY, DC Auto, Oklahoma Foreign, etc. |

The 16 and 15 inch collapsible tires have the same OD. They fit in the same space.
I have one 15 and one 16, they both fit in the spare tire well. |

I test mine once a year....never plan to actually use it unless my cell can't get AAA. Changing tires outside my shop sucks....

Always put the collapsible spare on the front. If you have a blown rear tire, put the regular front on the rear and put the spare on the front.
The spare goes on the front, NEVER on the back !! The diameter difference will wear out the differential action on your car quicker....it will also damage limited slip, if so equipped.... Read the owner's manual...... - Wil
