Reinstallation of windshield wiper, headlight washer, and gas vapor tanks
Lessons learned on reinstallation of windshield wiper, headlight washer, and gas vapor tanks:
1. Check your washer tank fill hose. Mine had some wear from tire contact. I decided not to replace it, but there was some definite wall thinning. Try to route it as high and inboard as possible. 2. Don't forget to put the collar on the fill top prior to connecting the hose. 3. The windshield pump with the indent is the discharge side. The suction side is the side outboard (closest to the wiper tank). 4. I had to tie strings onto the two lower windshield pump rubber bushings and pull them through the the front bumper. I got access to these through the blower suction hole by removing the blower. The top bushing I could reach by needle nose pliers through the front bumper. 5. On the headlight washer system, I put a bit longer hose on the discharge side of the tank. This allowed me to more easily mount the hose to the tank. The tank was accessible by the wheel well. 6. The PO had crimped the discharge hose of the headlight washer by running it between the fog lights and the bumper frame. By routing it above the fog lights I removed the crimp. This was the cause of my system not working. 7. I initially fit up the windshield washer tank with the vapor tank clear, and put the bolt through. I then made up the bottom bolt up strap loosely. At this point I removed the top bolt, slid the gas vapor tank in behind and made the bolt back up. Hope this provides help for someone who does this in the future. Brian |

Good tips - this must be a late model car if it has headlight washers(?) What year is it?
#7 is on the under fender vapor tank? The vapor tank under the cowl is held on with a big rubber band (on my '73) and is often broken or missing. I jammed mine up there so the snarl of hoses would hold it in place. I bought some big O-rings to try and hold it up the factory way when I dive into this area... |

Yep, #7 is forward of the left front wheel well. The gas vapor tank has a tab that fits into a fitting on the back of the left headlight on top, and a hole that bolts to the same bolt holding the top of the windshield washer tank.
And it is a 1985 911. I've been yanked on that (not mentioning year) that I really need to learn... Brian |
