Rear wheel hub damage

In the process of repairing a rear wheel bearing, a close inspection of the hub shows a PO may have filed a slight flat spot on surface of the hub. Is it safe to assume that this caused the bearing to fail and will happen again unless the hub is repaired or replaced? I've tried to search for information on damaged hubs but can't find anything. Thanks for the help.

Not sure where the flat spot is. Can you take a picture? The rear wheel bearing rides inside its own race so not sure a flat spot on the hub would hurt the bearing.

The filed flat spot is on the top of the hub stub and I'm afraid that it may have been "out of round" so the PO filed it down. I'm just guessing why anyone would file a hub.

You might cnsider looking around for a used on that doesn't have a flat spot while you have it disassembled.

"Is it safe to assume that this caused the bearing to fail and will happen again unless the hub is repaired or replaced?"

IMO a more likely reason is the PO "pounded" the stub axle into the new bearing thereby promoting an early failure.
