It may be time for the server upgrade...

We have all new hardware, but the software I'm having problems with. Maybe it's time to upgrade to version 3 of the BBS software. I'm just afraid it might make the forums run really really slow due to all the added features in the software. I like simple, and fast (when it works).

Maybe so. vBulletin is up into the 3's now. Do they give you a package price for x forums?

I already have all the licenses, it's just been a matter of whether it will be an improvement, or slow things down...

Wayne,

I’m willing to contribute some money to help. I suspect some others can also. Your providing this Forum is remarkable. I realize the commercial aspect, but some of us appreciate larger view of a free and open Porsche forum.

You made it happen. I’m willing to help with support.

Your dedication to maintaining the Forum with all of your family, business, social and other obligations are greatly appreciated. THANK YOU

Best,
Grady

Rennlist charges an annual membership, maybe you should too...

Hate to get shot at here by other folk's, but as Grady say's, you continue to provide an invaluable service here Wayne! A small annual membership fee is not to make more profit, but to continually upgrade the server to keep it from stumbling... As it has been for the past several days...:o

As with Rennlist, perhaps make it free to browse, but require membership to post, and to view photo's...

Just my $.02...

Get a test environment and redirect some traffic to that during a beta period.....

lhoudyshell 07-14-2007 02:14 PM

Wayne, this is a grreat site and service. Far as I am concerned meets all my needs, and is fairly fast, and uncomplicated. No charges please. Lynn

i don't like the "fee" idea, however i would pay.....
maybe keep the forum open, but "subscribing" members would receive nice discounts to PP :)

dshepp806 07-14-2007 02:43 PM

Set up the Beta environment and pass traffic there, as toddu suggested....ditto that!

This service is invaluable to me.....it has a worth in terms of dollars, just as Grady laid out. I, too, am of that perspective.

Best,

Fee? Slow response?

FYI, that was the reason I discovered PP. I was tired of the response time from Rennlist (possibly they are faster now).

A test environment sounds nice, but he'd have to duplicate all the server hardware and software.
Wayne, any user groups for the software you're running? Maybe someone with a similar setup that's already upgraded can fill you in on the differences in performance and if the current bugs have really been fixed.

It can't be any slower than what it has been the last couple nights, I was able to get in and make a purchase with ease, but going through the bbs was a little slow. I think that you should be able to go through the new software and disable any functions that you feel would slow it down, or that you feel were not needed.

Por_sha911 07-14-2007 06:03 PM

How about a fee for the OT post since it eats a lot of bandwith (with pics and all) and you could give a discount on one purchase in return for the fee.

cgarr 07-14-2007 06:08 PM

Will money speed it up?

It does when it comes to my car LOL

Throwing money at a problem does not automatically solve the problem.

BTW: Wayne said absolutely nothing about charging fees, so why even bring it up?

Wayne 962 07-15-2007 12:52 AM

This isn't a money issue, it's a time / resources issue. I rebuilt the tables and indexes today, and now it's running super-fast. But, it has a tendency to get corrupted, and require a 30-90 minute rebuild...

just knowing that Wayne cares enough to provide the forum...and take care of it and all it's issues is above and beyond. Like you Wayne I have my forums running on older versions, don't want to lose my modifications and add slower add-ons in the upgrades.
Then again I have way less traffic than this site.

I've never been asked for a penny from Rennlist and have been registered for a few years.

I like the idea of going with a beta site as well. It would be cool to see some of the new functionality of the newer software, and it gives us a good test bed to hammer on the hardware.
