gas leak...

hey fellas, i first started to notice a strong gas smell while driving my car. i finally noticed a leak coming from what im assuming is the fuel pump area....you know that plate on the underbelly of the car which can be removed....there's a small drip drip drip.....

im gonna take it apart tomorrow, but can anyone give me a guess as to what i can expect? its an 85 so im guessing i just got like a broken line or something....or maybe its just a rubber hose worn out...

thanks!

david

The line from the tank to the pump is rubber and hose clamped at both ends. From the pump to the tunnel is rubber crimped into metal ends and then into the plastic lines. The return line is plastic in the tunnel and, like the supply line, is rubber once it comes out of the tunnel and goes to the tank.

Most likely is a leak at any of the metal-rubber crimps (4 of them), in the supply line from the tank to the pump, at the return line to fuel tank connection, or at the gasket between the check valve and the pump.

If its one of the main fuel lines that's leaking, I feel your pain. I just replaced all of my lines as preventive maintenance since my entire front suspension, engine, and fuel tank were out of the car. Getting to the connections in the rear of the car without pulling the transmission is the real trick - I'd never do it with the trans in the car.
