A little help in South Carolina
Ok. Like many, many others I've been browsing the classifieds here and elsewhere for months and months looking for my first 911. I love the look and sound of nearly every Porsche I've ever seen. Have gone to a few DEs just to watch. In my early 30s, I feel like it is time for me to finally jump in. BUT, and it's a giant BUT, I haven't driven one yet.
I've found an '85 I want to take the next step on to get a little more serious (PPI), but before I make the leap I would really like to drive a 915 to make sure it's what I really want. Is there anyone in the Columbia, SC area that has an 84-86 911 with a 915 that could, and would, let me experience the car? I'm not looking to thrash a car around - I just want to get a general feel for the transmission since I hear so many stories about them. Any help is appreciated. Thanks. |

You might check with the local Porsche guru in lexington, I think it is Doc's. I work for a Lexington company and have stopped at his place near our office. Nice guy, very knowlegable and approcchable. Very involved with the local PCA and might be a good contact and resource.
I too am looking for a 84-85 Carrera, missed a good one 2 weeks ago but I couldn't react quickly enough so someone else locally got a real sweet car.

There is a PCA meeting tonight at 7:00 in Columbia at McDaniel Porsche. I would be willing to bet there will be someone there with a car. My understanding, Doc's is the place up there.

Thanks guys. I actually live & work in Lexington and I drove out to Doc's once on a sunday to check it out but no one was there (as expected). I did see some beautiful cars by the building though.
I think I'll give him a call or drive by when I get some time. Hey wilke, coincidentally I was in Charleston last night so missed the meet at McDaniel. |

Les, at Doc's, is as good as you can get in South Carolina. He is good on the track too. There is also a fellow by the name of Bunny Craven that is good with 911's, especially the SC's and Carrera's. 803-892-4911.

Thank you very much. I may take you up on that. What part of Columbia are you in?

Hello Rob, I actually came to one a while back at your invitation. I said hello but you were busy (about to instruct I think) so I didn't really get to talk. When I got back, I told my wife if she had any hopes remaining that I might not buy a porsche one day, she could go ahead and flush those hopes down the toilet.
![]() I would love to come to the PCA event, but I'll be in Road Atlanta for the Petite Le Mans that day. |

I'll be at Petit LeMans that weekend too. We usually walk around and view the race from as many corners as possible, but eventually sit at 10a/10b. Maybe we'll meet there, if we haven't met by then. After all, Lexington isn't far from Simpsonville at all (less than an hour).
Good luck! If you want someone in the Upstate to do a PPI (an independent that may not know the car), give Bill or Frank a call at Protech Motorsports, located in Greenville. (864) 232-7150
