#1 cause is a worn clutch disk.
Oil leaking onto the clutch Soft or broken motor / transmission mounts Loose transmission to engine mounting bolts

I recently replaced mine, which was chattering. It was also a bit contaminated with oil. John Walker's observation that rear main seals almost never leak is certainly reliable. Indeed, if the rear main seal did leak, the flywheel would throw that oil out onto the bellhousing anyway, instead of onto the disk. Clutch disks get contaminated from transmission oil crawling up the tranny input shaft. I replaced that seal. In fact, I installed the new seal in a slightly different position to keep it from rubbing on the part of the input shaft that was showing some wear from past seals.

It can also be something as simple as the clutch cable adjustment and preload of the Bowden tube.
