Wong'd and more
Know you guys probably get tired of hearing about it, but I just got a Steve Wong chip and it is unreal. My car, an 86 with 180k+ miles on it, has been awakened again. Low end torque is much better, midrange from 3k to 5k is simply astounding. My car already had the 4k dme and I've had to back my idle down a notch. But the product is truly top notch and works, to me, even better than advertised. Thanks Steve.
Also... on a side note... several months back I had no start condition and went through quite a bit of trouble-shooting, which included removing my DME and checking solders, etc. Well, since I've gotten the car running again.. I've experienced a rough cold start that I haven't been able to put my finger on. Starts one hit, but then is rough until I get it a little warmed up. Well, while installing the chip, Steve mentioned a little brown wire on the DME harness and explained what it was for. Apparently in my troubleshooting efforts, I had re-connected this wire and that was the cause of my rough idle issue. Cali cars have this wire connected for emissions reasons... I assumed it was something that came unhooked and connected it back. After changing out my chip and unhooking this brown connection... My cold start issues have disappeared. Thanks again Steve Wong. -Troy |

Troy, is the brown wire you mention under the seat at the DME itself? Good info to know.

Jerry... Yes, the brown wire is at the big DME plug wire.. two brown ends with appropriate plug connectors on each. Your may be tape up where you can see it... mine has always been exposed. According to Steve Wong's doc, these should only be attached for California cars to aid in emissions. During my early troubleshooting efforts, I blindly reconnected this brown wire thinking that I had accidently pulled them apart.

Does every car have the brown wires, or just those originally sold in CA? I just had my DME out to put in my new Steve W chip (which I love by the way!), and could not find these...

Hmm, I better check again, wonder if they are taped up and I can't see them. I did see one blue wire with a 2 prong connecter coming from the tunnel with nothing apparant to connect to, but I just chalked that up to some PO install of something...haven't traced it yet.

I see Steve beat me to the punch on the photo... glad to plug your product Steve... it's awesome.
This brown wire thing has really sparked some interest. Mine looks about like what Steve posted. Here's a shot of mine... ![]()

If you are having real trouble finding them be aware they may have been cut- mine were at some point in the car's life. I can just barely see their remnants.

Jimmy, I had no idea - Thanks!!
Ryan, no such wires to worry about in the 964s. 3.2s only. But there's a lot of Cali cars floating all over the U.S. so check and disconnect. |
