Width & Length of Engine and Trans Assembly?

For purposes of removing the engine & transmission, I'm just wondering how wide the engine is at its widest point as well as how long the assembled engine/trans unit is?

I'm asking because I have a low drive on lift in my workshop and wonder whether the engine and transmission could be removed with the car on the lift rather than on jackstands.

The point of possible interference is the inside dimension of the ramps at their narrowest point.

Anyone know the size off the top of their head, or have a engine & transmission assembly on the ground that they could measure for me.

I'm just trying to consider all aspects of my upcoming purchase.

Thanks

Dom

Engine & Trans. Dimentions.....

Dom,

Since you did not mention the model and year of the car, I'll assume it will be for a 911. I have my SC engine on a test stand and got some approximate width and length that might help you.

The motor dimension (exhaust and muffler installed): 36" width, 28" length.
Transmission with crossmember installed: 18" width, 30" length.
Over-all dimension (motor + trans.): 36" width, 58" length. Good luck.

Tony, I am asking about a 911

Is the muffler wider than the rest of the engine?

By the way, is the 36" width just the body of the muffler, or does it include the short tailpipe on the left side?

Thanks for checking.

Dom,

As you can see from the attached picture, the tail pipe extends another 6". But the muffler could be removed before the engine drop and will not be a big factor.

The 36" dimension is the total width with the sheet metals on both sides. If you're using a scissor lift, make sure that horizontal beam of the lift is atleast 3" away from the trans. cross member. Othewise, you have to manipulate to get the transmission down.
