Smoky 911 fixed with secret sauce......

remember this?

I'm getting oil smoke after warm up on my '87 911 stock 3.2.
Leak down values are:
1-15%
2-20%
3-18%
4-5%
5-28%
6-11%

Leak-down was done on cold engine.
Mechanic thinks its oil wipe ring because of blow by through oil reservoir. He doesn't think it's the valve guides.
We're trying Lubracleen oil supplement and Essentialube for 5K mi to see if it clears the gunk from oil wipe ring, stops the smoke and reduces the leak-down #'s.

It's fixed................................

This guy was Larry's Performance Werks in Asheville. He called it RIGHT.

The smoking has stopped. The fix was and oil change with some "secret sauce". Add 1 qt each of Lubrakleen oil supplement and Essentialube, and topped it off with a good grade of 10W/30. I havn't ck'd leak down values yet--scared to. He said not to use the 20/50 stuff unless you track the car. For a driver, use 10W/30, and don't lug the engine!! Said I got it all constipated driving it at low rev's............. I'm thinking of taking a tbsp of each myself before bed each night; maybe it'll improve my disposition........

His info............

Lucky you. Larry tried the same fix on my 87. It was fruitless. Ended up having to go for a new topend rebuild. OUch. Get out and enjoy the parkway now.

You need thicker 20w50 if you are burning oil. No reason to burn away the thin stuff. Your engine is tired, tolerances are larger, give it some thicker oil, trust me.

Question ...

Did the smoke increase for a bit during the treatment and then dissipate?

Or did it simply taper off from its current amount of smoke over the 5k miles?

upper piston ring easily cokes with dino oil or a synthetic without high temp survival. Without researching this just about the best is M1 15w-50 which is around 425F and Redline is about 450F is my best estimate.

The issue is the ability of the upper cylinder to cool after combustion. LubeMaster77 is the best pelicanhead to comment on this subject.

different strokes...

anyway, great news

when exhaust valve guide clearance is excessive there is no other way but a valve job. In Brorag's case it was an engine with an unknown driving history in a nice '87 with a nice engine. His wrench did an educated guess that cost little.

My engine takes about 10mi to warm up. If it's used to just go to the mall the engine never warms up and the oil never heats off condensation or cold start combustion gas. The easiest tell tale is the white gook slime under the oil cap.

And Brorag does know how to drive that engine to keep the oil looking like new after 5k mi. He's a routine 3.3k-4k.. that's perfect imo.

smoke tapered off--BTW, the secret sauce isn't sold in stores, you have to get it from reps--I called and the rep's sending a gal of each. $$ works out to about $7.50/qt.

Larry told me the same thing--after the leakdown, he was leaning towards gummed up piston wiper rings.

So you are doing the whole deal huh. I recall we talked at The Tail of the Dragon and you were leaning that way then. You will be glad you did. And now while you are in there...
