the 911sc and a decent stereo set-up

Recently, another member posted a message about actually wanting a stereo in his 911sc...I agree with the user...though my flat six sounds like sex to me most of the time, there are times (long trips, constant highway speeds etc.) when a nice sound system would come in handy.

That said, has anyone put together a decent, albeit cost effective system? Anyone ever put additional speakers in the rear quarter trim pieces?

any ideas, suggestions or layouts are more than appreciated.

Thanks as always,

Rob

im pretty happy with mine, pretty simple - for now.
Alpine CDA-9885 with ipod 60gig hooked up with 14,000 songs on board with J&L 5.25 inch speakers in doors and back shelf. no amplifier. hard tp believe but it sounds awsome, considering the small speakers. some day i would like to install a small sub with an amplifer running just the sub but for now i am content

I have pretty much the same setup, ran the Ipod cable to the glove compartment ( you can control your Ipod with the Alpine head unit). I did add a 200w amp in the trunk which really made all the difference when driving with the top down.

look for the post about 2 weeks ago - forget his user name but he posted he was not into the Church of Light Wt. etc. -- he works for Focal IIRC

with that & bell's info you should be fine

just remember that existing speakers over 5-10 years old are prob. junk by now from exposure, etc.

As a 'senior' type with a bit of a hearing loss , I replaced what appeared to be an original? Sony Cassette pullout with a sweet Pioneer AM/FM/CD/XM that works like a charm. Then went back to have all the speakers in both doors and both in package panel replaced with upgraded 'new' speakers. Mine does not have an external amp nor do I have any 'outs' plumbed for any of the stuff some of the other guys have noted above.

I do spend a fair amount of time listening to the sweet whine of our flat six however.....

BTW I have an '88 Carrera coupe.

That's me. Although technically I sell Focal home products - not 12V. And I am associated with Focal, I don't work for them.

For the latest update see my site http://members.rennlist.com/imcarthur/system.htm

Here’s what I learned:
1. Dampening. You can’t just stuff a speaker in & walk away. You need dampening – all thin metal surfaces need a Dynamat type of dampening skin. You also need to seal the ‘enclosure’ where the speaker lives. If that’s a door, then seal all openings with your Dynamat or clone.

2. Fill. You need to use a polyester ‘pillow’ fill to further dampen the sound as it’s bouncing around your enclosure. Clarity is the result.

3. Amps. The amplifiers built in to decks are crap with teeny, tiny power supplies for multiple channels. It doesn’t work that way. Speakers need current. Current needs a real power supply. Buy a good separate amplifier. Cheapest is NOT best in this regard.

4. Bass response. If you expect to play it loud, you will need a sub. And a separate amp for the sub. You can be very inventive about location but it needs to be rigid. It needs to be damped & stuffed. And it needs the proper air volume to achieve real lower frequencies.
IMHO of course. I'll update my post sometime.

Ian

My unmodified '88 coupe had original factory doors/liners and full speaker enclosures as new from the factory. Being an old poop, I spoke at length with the CarToys installer and he said leave the full factory enclosures as they were in excellent shape and I probably wouldnt hear the difference..of course, that's just me....if I were listening to a bunch more dynamic music as many do, I probably would have stepped up to the amp/sub that imcarthur mentioned in the above msg.

sorry to forget , Ian -- my mind has been focused on electrical rewiring, batt insulation, and the statute of limitations -- that has used up all available brain cells.

- good summary

just a note about needing an amp...i would agree, but i find the built in amp in the Alpine units to be fantastic. if had about 4 of em in the past. they get you by pretty well... the same can be said for their bass engine. the newest one i have is absolutely fantastic...very simple yet effective tone control.

-plays CD too and can be easily set up for satallite. the Apline ipod wire is long, so i just ran it down and under the floor mat where i can easily reach it if i need to. the glove box would work too if you dont mind drilling a hole into the glove box

. there is MUCH hope for nice, clear satisfying sound with just a deck and 4 speakers ($600 total)....though if i had a big budget i would definately do more. brand new high quality speakers are a must. dont expect anything from 10 year old speakers.

+1 regarding the dampening. i stuffed my sound holes with thick foam. makes a difference

Never a problem, Randy.

I know you're interested in door speakers & their environment. I found a trick that worked nicely.

I filled a 28 cm x 36 cm freezer bag with polyester fill. Then I stuffed it into the door speaker cavity. No, not an enclosure but also not the fabrication feat that that would require. I loosely taped it down & even roughly cut it to bring speaker wire through. I wasn't trying for air tight because acoustically, an air tight plastic bag is . . . well, an air tight plastic bag.

What I did achieve, is a definite improvement in mid-bass definition & lower midrange clarity. It reduced the door cavity's boxiness. Sub 100 Hz, I didn't care about & it would have little/no impact there anyway. The bag also protects the driver & the poly fill from water drips from the window etc.

Just fwiw.

Ian
