Unhappy A/C trials and tribulations (long)

I have installed a Rennaire System 2 kit from our host, which included all new hoses, a Procooler, a new, improved evaporator, and a new Sanden 507 compressor, and all of the insulation, clamps, o-rings, etc. The kit also included excellent support and advice from Ron at Rennaire. The install went pretty smoothly. I did it evenings after work and a weekend, with probably about 20 hours in it. I then took it to my local Porsche shop and had them pull a vacuum and charge the system with r134.

But, now I have two issues.

First, the A/C evaporator blower has failed. When I initially picked up the car, it would only blow on high, essentially. There was a very small amount of air flow on speed 1, and just a little more on speed 2. Speed 3 also seemed a little low. The tech at the shop tested the resistance in the thermal bi-metal switch, and it seemed ok. On the way home, I heard some noises coming from the blower and I played with the capillary tube. I pulled it out and repositioned it, but judging from the shape of it, it was definitely caught in the blower fan.

I took a longer trip this past weekend (about 4hours, each way), using the blower on high. The evaporator froze up a few times in the first two hours. Then, halfway into the trip, the blower stopped working completely. Soo…..I poked around on the blower motor today, and discovered that I have juice at the electrical connection in the smuggler’s box, but the blower won’t come on.

What do you think would be my best r&r option? Order a new motor from our host? Try and locate the motor via some other source? I see several references to people who sourced motors for under $100. Also, I hate to take apart my beautifully wrapped and insulated evaporator assembly, but there seems to be now way out . I guess I just cut it at the box seam, and then tape it back up.

My second issues relate to vent temps, which are not what I hoped for, yet. I will focus on that when I get this blower issue resolved.

AC System on a 1979 911SC

My evaporator assembly bit the dust a few yrs. back. Motor fried and started smoking through the vents. I changed out the whole unit. Purchased from Parts Heaven of California. Installed it and working for years now. Good used parts for this Old car will do.

Good luck to you !

I have had luck removing , cleaning and lubricating the blower assembly . It however takes quite a bit of time and effort and if I had it to do over would try and source or have the motor rebuilt . Good Luck . You have already done the hard and expensive part .

Now would be a good time to upgrade your evap fan. Some one makes a better one. If you do a search you can probably dig up the company. I think they are in Texas as well.

Thanks for the responses. I am intrigued by the idea of an improved blower, though I am not sure more CFM is better. Retroair is nearby in Dallas, so I think may give them a call and see what my options are.
