heater blower troubleshooting...

Working through a life long list of things that will forever bother me.... I have no heat... so today I decided to take a break to look for anything obvious.

1. I checked power at the plug with a 12 volt meter (I had the ignition on with the 2 red levers up between the seats) I have no power at the 2 prong femail plug where it goes to the motor.

now where do I look? I checked all the fuses all are not blown, I don't know where else to look.

I understand the heater blower is turned on when you lift the red levers but how do I see if there getting power?

Help... man I love the car but someone did some crappy work when they put the 3.2 in there.... the electrical work needs help....

Also I have the late model Porsche reflector (ghosted Porsche letters)... I took it off to take a look behind it (need to get some paint and start spraying under and inside things to eliminate rusty surfaces) and any how there are 2 lights on the back of the reflector not hooked up... any idea how I can hook them up?

never ending work... I think at some point you just got to drive them and forget about all the things you wish were new and up to date... it will drive me crazy till I give in.

Hope you guys can help????

I have a 1980SC. Hopefully they are similar, if not the same. First, turn the ignition on but don't crank the engine. Open the hood and you would most likely be able to hear the heater motor running. Assuming you don't hear it. Check if there is power at the switch, not the levers between the seats. The levers between the seats are just vent levers. Speaking of which, lift up the levers. Check under the car and see if the vents are actually opening when these levers are up. Then check to make sure they are closed when the levers are down. A lot of times the springs are missing or get bound and can no longer function. Hope this helped. If not, I tried.

You have quite a mess there my friend. There are several components missing that are part of the fuse/relay panel missing from your car. Without them the blower fan will not work. In addition to the thread you found above read thru these (including the detailed links in the second post): Heater Control Circuit

Once you understand the circuit you will know what you need to get. On the other hand you could just backdate the heater plumbing and the engine cooling fan will probably give you enough heat most days as long as your heater valves are properly functioning when you pull the red levers.

Edit - I just noticed you have an '82 with a 3.2, so the above threads may be more confusing than helpful, they are for '84-'89 Carrera's...oops. So depending on how extensive the 3.2 transplant was it may be of no help at all. Did the transplant include/exclude other components and/or wiring harnesses?

Good luck
Andrew

i have an 83...but my wiring is stock. i cant tell whats going on with your wires. in my car, there is a small fuse box on the left side of the engine compartment where the heater blower fuses are located. mine recently blew and i had a small fire in my blower motor so ive disconnected the blower motor for now

i believe the floor levers not only open the vents, but also activate the blower motor. i found with my heat recently, even though i dont currently have a blower motor, im still getting heat when i pull up...just no motor actually blowing air through the heat exchangers.....so, the heat just doesnt come out as powerfully as it did...but i still get some...so long as i am moving

i know that my blower motor only turned on when i pulled up on the levers. where your fuses are, im not quite sure now since you have a later model engine and blower motor and a giant soup of wires

what i also dont understand is why you dont have heat...unless you have not tried while your moving. next time its cool, go for a drive and pull up and see if heat comes out, regardless of whether or not your blower motor operates. i believe you should. you still have heat exchangers?

wouldn't you think I need the fuse tray posted in my link above? There really isn't more than a hand full of wires and 2 plugs (its just about a foot long and all balled up. I take it some wires go to a small fuse box and some go to a few relays... I have a cab so the rear window defogger would not matter to me.. just need the heater blower to operate. I guess I need to get out the meeter and find every wire there and write them down with color code.... then I Will need to find out what is hot and what is a ground... after that the ones that are not a ground should be the other half of a circuit I guess.... somewhere I should be able to find a circuit for the back fuse panel right.

man head is hurting already....

need that fuse tray thing, any ideas?

man... I am going to need some help on this one... anyone have an idea? what all am I missing with this being gone? I looked for a min and it had things like back up lights and blower motor and rear window defroster as well as flasher and other things... All that stuff works? Well I dont have a rear windo to defrost... but back up lights and flashers and such work fine? I guess they could have rewierd some things? looking now to figure it out... Wonder if I can jump something to get the fan moving? is it a positive negitive plug?

Yeah, you're nowhere close to a heater relay discussion.

Go to http://www.pelicanparts.com/PartsLookup/HTML/911_USA_84_86_KATALOG/902-00-Frame3.htm

You are missing parts 14 - 30. The fuse/relay panel etc. Since you have a 3.2 engine this is an '84 diagram.
