What is a Carrera 3.0?

Hi

I'm on Cape Cod at the moment and today on 6A I saw a red 911 with somewhat smaller bumpers, ala 1974, but with a brazen exhaust note, no tail, fuchs and only one side mirror, driver side flag style with black molding, and on the engine lid it said Carrera 3.0.

What year is the car? Was it imported to the USA?

The car had Mass license plates?

Wellborn

That was a 74 with Euro bumpers, basically a SC.

Was the 1974 with euro bumpers imported to the usa? was the 3.o engine an option in 1974? I thought all 74s came with 2.7 liter engine. Was the 3.0 quick?

no it wasn't a '74 it was a 3.0 carrera. a euro car from 76-77. There's a lot of info on this board about them. It had a 3.0 engine CIS injection ~205 h.p. or so.

C3s were made in 76-77 for the ROW market. They were the predessor of the US market SC in 78. 3.0 motor, 200hp, flares. What's great about them is they are the lightest cars with 9 inch rear flares.

"The Carrera 3, despite a reputation for being a 'tamed-down' version of the original 2.7RS and 2.7 Carreras, had almost identical 0-60 and 0-100mph performance figures but was endowed with so much extra torque that it could pull from 25 to 100mph in top gear over 3 seconds faster than either of its production predecessors."

That's impressive! There's a black one here in town with the black trim and tail. I see it every once in a while. Pretty unique considering my town is only about 15,000 people.

A very interesting aspect of the Carrera 3.0 is its' unique crankcase that used the same crank as the 2.4/2.7 motors. This means it's possible to swap out the 2.4/2.7crank and put in a 2.0/2.2 shortstroke crank. This makes for a rev happy motor that great for racing. It's the same case that came with the early Turbos.

Overall the C3s are a great platform for a race car.

Didn't all Carrera 3.0's have that lovely Weissach-style tail? Or was that an option?

There were 2 tails available, both options.

One was the black p/u and the other the early f/g w/ black p/u lip which looks like the Weissach

I don't believe the 76-77 3.0L cars discussed here had the wider rear flares that the later SC ( or earlier 74 Carrera) had........ I think it had the regular ( of the time) narrow body/narrow rear flares of the normal 2.7's ....

Well, I'll be dipped !!! .......

Thanks for the clarification, . If I would have checked..I would have seen it right here, p.17 of the original printing of Anderson's Performance book...

"The 3.0 liter Carrera as introduced for 1976 in Europe as Porsche's top-line street car; this version of the Carrera was the forerunner of the 911SC. The 3.0 Liter Carrera had an engine that was based on the new, stronger aluminum engine that had been developed for the 930 Turbo, and retained the larger fender flares from the earlier Carrera's ( italics, mine).

Sorry for the gaffe....

Have never owned a C3, nor do I have much to add to the discussion on them. And, despite living on the Cape, I haven't seen the car named above. But, if you've got some free time tonight, Jackman, there's a cruise night (mostly American iron) here on the Cape. It's held at the A&W on Route 28 over in Harwich, 6-8 pm.

Is it this? I won't vouch for it, but I understand that this is a Carrera 3.0.
