New member & another new project

I am new to this forum and for that matter Porsche in general. Allways owned BMWs but recently acquired my first Porsche, a 2003 C4S and shortly after that my 2nd a '75 911S Silver Anerversary with RoW 78SC 3.0. The '75 is to be a project car for me and my 2 boys to build and race together (AutoX and DE).

The intent was to upgrade the car in phases starting with suspension and brakes to continue autocrossing and then later body work and lastly engine. What turned out as good intentions doing a well pased project got thrown for a loop due to a problem we picked up with the gearbox With the engine removed and entire suspension dismantled for powdercoating and cleaning it just didnt make sense to put it all together again and to take it apart again for the body work later in the project.

So phase one turned into a rather extensive/expensive list way more than I initially wanted to do:

Suspension:
Elephant Racing poly pronze busing allround
22 & 28 Hollow torsion bars
Revalved Bilstein shocks
Offset Camber plates
Decambered ball joints & turbo tie rods
Bump steer kit
Smart Racing 23mm anti roll bar front, stock rear for now (still have open diff)
Rear monoballs
Carrera adjustable spring plates
Triangulated brace
Target: euro height or a little lower with -2 F and -2.5R Camber

Brakes:
87 Carrera Rear
964 Front on 944t rotors
master cylinder not sure yet if 19 or 23mm

Engine:
46 PMO
SSI HE
M&K R-type muffler
Light flywheel with power clutch
MSD ignition

Gearbox:
Fix shifting problem and renew obvious wear items

Body:
Color to be black
IROC conversion from TRE with clubsport rollbar and ducktail to be done entirely by ourselves including body and painting.

Wheels:
not sure yet but the Lindsey P2s Accented 9.5 and 11s X 17 " for tire choices mainly, money permitting.

Phase 2 will be maybe a couple of years out so it will be mostly engine to try and get as close as possible to 300hp and upgrade transmission and brakes to handle that.

This is what she looked like when we got her: body was in great shape, with small rust bubbles in the usual places.

We are progressing with the project slowly but surely. We stripped the car completely and started stripping the paint and sound deadening on the inside. It revealed a lot of rust on the passenger side floor board, there must have been a window seal leak or something as it was still wet when we stripped the inside.




We received all the body panes from TRE and with some research on this forum and help from Dave @ TRE starred installing the rear fenders and bumper. Since the car was completely stripped i did not have the wheels as reference point for the alignment of the fenders so i used a combination of the torsion bar hole and the fender corners. I just tacked in one fender, roughly lined up the rear bumper and lined the other fender up with bumper and the other reference points, marked the fender and tacked it in place. On 2nd thought i should have lined everything up before even cutting, i will do that in the front. I had to make new brackets for the rear bumper as the hydraulic bumpers didn't line up with the brackets on the bumper. PITA


Rear Fenders:




I started with the front today and lined the bumper up first and clamped it in place. I then taped the fender flairs in place to get an idea on initial alignment and this is where the fun begins. They dont line up, if i align the front the back is off , as per the photos, if i line up the rear the front is off. I will have to ask Dave again for help. If there is anyone who reads this who dealt with the same problem i would like to hear how you got around the this misalignment.

Welcome to the board; looks like you're making great progress.
Here's a long shot. I can't tell from the pics if your rear quarter windows are fixed or opening, but if they are fixed and if you don't plan to reuse them, please let me know as I'm looking for a pair with bright (as opposed to black) trim.

Updates on Progress

Thanks to everyone for your kind responses.

Its been an interesting project so far and i think my kids are enjoying it somehow but are getting a little fed-up with stripping paint.... This have been progressing along slowly. This is much more work than I initially anticipated but that was just lack of experience and excessive optimisim.

Anyhow, i welded all the fenders after much positioning and trying to get things figured out without the suspension and wheels installed. I found a great thread, but too late, that provides the measurements for installing the rear fenders.
fender alignment

Fronts


Out of this I learnt 2 things, my welding suck and my welding suck.

I fabricated new brackets for the front and rear bumpers and made attachment points on the bumpers to connect to the brackets. The front and rear brackets look the same.




As shown from the previous posts the front bumper didnt align properly and i had to cut sections out of the bumper to make it lign up with the fenders about 20mm on each side and re-attached the ends to keep the profile.



The bumper to fender alignment came out ok after that but i still need to do some finishing on the tip of the bumper where it meets the fender. This after market installations are custom work to make them fit no matter which way you look at it, that is my opionion anyway...

2nd Installment

I installed a TRE oil cooler air flow pan. This was not my greatest work as i made a mistake in the height measurement and had to reweld a piece of the metal i removed to cover the gap. It just means more work finishing it all.



My wheels arrived yesterday i can only say wow.. They are Lindsey P2s 9 & 11 x 17s. After a lot of research i narrowed tire choices down to 2 BFG T/A KD and Goodyear F1 GS-D3 size availability had a lot to do with the choices. I decided finally to get the F1s as they have better hydro planing resistance and noise comfort levels from tireracks ratings. I will have to see how they hold up in Auto X and DEs. Should get them later this week.







I have also in parallel been working on some smaller bits, mainly suspension and brakes cleaning and repainting. I had a bunch of things powder coated and received most of it back, valve covers and some backdating ducts still to go. Here are some pictures of what i have so far.







The humidity in Atlanta is playing havoc with the naked body as you can see from the pictures and i will have to complete metal prep and spray the epoxy sealer this weekend to stop any further surface rust.

I will post again hopefully lot sooner than the last update.

Lindsey provided the cores as mine were 15" and they needed 16" cores, this bumped up the price a little i think $50 per wheel.

great write up and looks to be an even better project.

you should get some pictures of your boys working on the car, its a great family project. And i can say that first hand, me and my dad under-took a very similar porject when i was 15 (5 1/2 years ago), even started with the same base model (75 911s), however mine was no where near driving condition, w/o a transmission....

it took me 4 years to get it on the road, worked out perfect as i had some driving experience.... however the car still comes off the road every couple of months for stage 6,7,.....19...etc.... funny how that happens.


what are you planning on for headlights? H1's H4's? or covered (aka not street legal), or maybe something more exciting???


-all your powder coated pieces looks beautiful, and your bumpers + fenders ended up lining up very well


keep us up to date !!!

Man, guess I don't know the secret Lindsey password. Twice I've called to place an order and was told they couldn't unless I provide the cores. Anyway, back on topic, great to see so many (relatively speaking) killer IROC projects on the board!

Thanks,

The idea was to do something together before my oldest son goes off to college and we agreed on this. The worst part is almost over, once we sprayed it, we can start assembling, I'm sure that will be a little bit more exiting for them. Also they will appreciate it more when they drive it.

I will install H4s it just looks a little cooler that the current headlights, have to stay street legal, maybe euro (yellow) lenses in the future.

Yea they asked me the password and i used LUCK....it worked.
Maybe should ask them to call you or reserve a set as soon as they get some in, they must be sourcing them from somewhere....
