Remove engine tin without dropping the motor?

My rear engine tin has a crack and I want to remove it from the car for repair.
It is the piece between the rear of the motor and the body. (I believe PN 930-106-081-12)

Can anyone let me know how to remove this piece ?

thanks

Car is an 1988 Carerra

If it's like the early cars, there are several small bolts (10mm heads) that attach it to the case and also to the side tins. You may need to remove/loosen the engine mount bolts and lower it down a little to get enough clearance to get it out. Can't tell you for sure on that year car.

Which side? The left side has the temperature sensor and other stuff going thru it. I'm pretty sure the heat exchanger must be removed to get it out and even then there are a couple of hard to get at bolts requiring double double jointed hands and tools.

Unfortunately, on a Carrera, removing the rear piece of engine tin is a real PITA, (unlike the earlier cars) due to the "heat tube" that goes through it near the distributor. You can see it in the 3rd pic in this thread (even though I've backdated my heat), but it's covered by the rubber boot.

You're going to have to remove that tube from below (it routes to both heat exchangers), and as I recall, I also had to remove both side pieces of tin. Maybe someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but when I was doing mine, I already had the engine dropped several inches (partial engine drop), which made it easier, and I'm almost thinking that it can't be done without the additional clearance/wiggle room (but I could be wrong about that aspect). Hope this helps.

I did this about 2 months ago on the same car, you dont need to remove the side tin, you will need to remove the tube between the heat exchangers that goes up to the blower and more than likely take your ac compressor off to get to all 642 screws, a socket extension with a CV joint thingy is a must, all straight forward but a pain in the ass. I ended up dropping my muffler too which is no biggy, you can lower the rear of the engine but I managed without doing that, Good luck!

Thanks for the correction spence! One caveat to tasks like removing the muffler, partially dropping the motor, etc. If your exhaust hardware is still original, simple things like removing the muffler can become a royal PITA just to get the corroded bolts off. The first time I removed my muffler (on a garage queen 46K mile car), I ended up cutting, drilling, and cussing the bolts off (I didn't have access to a torch), and it sucked. First time dropping my motor, my torque wrench snapped my engine crossmember before the engine mount bolt came loose...you get the idea :)
