2.4 oil sump plate...spring or crush washers...?

I'm resurrecting the old 2.4 in my new 914-6 project. Changing the oil is on the list.

According to our host, I ordered what I thought were the correct parts...8 flat spring washers for under the bolts that hold the oil sump plate. However, upon removing the existing plate, I discovered there are 8 aluminum crush washers.

So...what is it? Spring or crush?

Also, can I use a soft copper washer in lieu of the aluminum washer for the oil drain plug?

Thanks in advance,

D. Ocean

sump

The proper hardware is the alum sealing washers or the copper will work, and nylon lock nuts, be sure not to over torque as in "crush the washers" or it will leak, also check to be sure the seal surface on the gasket side of the plate is flat, when they get over tightened they get high spots at the hole, put it on a belt sander,or a smooth surface with some sand paper make some figure 8's and take a look at it.

Well, the PET and parts manual call out spring washers and DIN 934 regular hex nuts through 1970. The spring washers were designed to keep the nuts from loosening.

That being said, if you don't want it to leak, do what Mike says: aluminum "crush" washers, OE Porsche only, which are designed to deform the right amount when clamp load is applied, and DIN 985 nylock nuts so they don't shake loose from the vibration.

And I would torque it crosswise like wheel lugs so you don't deform the plate.

nylocks and flat washers for me. the flat washer helps to spread out the torque a bit in hopes of not warping the plate.

So...we have two for crush, one for flat and a parts retailer that says spring. Do the crush washers prevent leaking or are they there to prevent the nuts from backing out? I have the nylock nuts.

???

Use the nylock nuts and the aluminum crush washers for the sump plate.

For the drain plug, I got into a pinch not long ago, I did not have, nor could I find the proper crush washer locally. My last stop was at Autozone, and the guy took me behind the counter and we started going through a bunch of American oil pan drain plug seals. We found one that fit the bolt correctly, and I think it's much better then the crush washer to seal it up. It's an over sized metal washer with a rubber coating. Not a drop has leaked from the plug ever since. Now the rest of the motor, that's another story

Can't seem to find the crush washers in the parts section. I searched up until '89 and they still show the spring washers.

Although not the recommended way, you can re-use the existing crush washers if they have not been over crushed. Put the best side on the plate side so they will have a better chance of properly sealing

Just for the purists out there, the OEM washers are stainless steel wave washers and the OEM nuts are also stainless steel. I don't like using nylocks for this application because they have a nasty tendency to lock up so tightly on the stud that next time you back them out, they take the stud out too.

Those are the ones I have. They're called spring washers.

I guess I'll give them a try and see what happens as I can't find the crush washers.

Check with http://www.belmetric.com and download the PDF catalog. I think you'll find what you need there, or at least call them and ask.
