Just joined the club...

Hi all!

Very recently bought a '69 911E , which from the Porsche number match up seems to be all original... chassis, body, paint (sand beige) and engine. In very good condition considering age (will post pics soon) and not a whole load to be done in the short term. Spent most of its life in a more car friendly environment than Ireland!

Just some nagging questions if anyone could help me out....
Some rust spots on the edge of the door where a previous owner obviously liked parking a little close to a wall and also at a number of paint chip points and a small amount of paint crazing at the driver side front windscreen.

Other than that the body is in good condition. Have a little bit of a battery charge issue, which I think I have chased to the alternator (after a number of hours reading posts on this forum.. A collective thanks!) but other than that runs and sounds.... oh....just beautiful!

1. Don't want to consider full body paint, as apart from the spots above she doesn't even nearly need it and would like to keep her original as long as possible (plus cant afford to do the full and proper job at the moment). So the question is.... how do I best address the spot rusting (without major surgery)??

2. She seems to idle a little on the low side (mainly judged from my ear). What is the idle rpm for an 96 911E? Wanted to know that before I go adjusting.. up till now, I have used just been giving it a touch more with the throttle advance by the handbrake (sorry). Putting it down to perhaps a slight stretch in the accelerator cable after all these years?? Not talking about much... sounds like she needs less than 50 rpm more.

Thanks for your help and looking forward to sharing my experience's with you all.

Damon

Rust...

Damon,

With rust there's usually more than less. So once you open up the areas you might find that there's more than you anticipated. So I would think about that before you start as you didn't want to get into an expensive repair at this time.

If you do move ahead I would strip the affective areas to bare metal so you know the extent of the rust. Then you would neutralize the rust with a metal prep product. If the damage has eaten through the metal then you have to make a decision as to the repair. A quick fix is Bondo (plastic filler), or the better choice would be to cut the bad metal out and weld back in new metal.

I'll leave the idle question to members that are more qualified than myself...

Thanks Mitch... something to think about!

Yes, still with MFI. Last fully documented engine refurb, including MFI was just under 10,000 miles.

Low idle is a good thing with MFI! It's high idle that's tough to deal with. If you go to the technical article section of this website you will find information about a process called "CMA." This stands for check, measure, and adjust, and is a methodical means of getting the many variable of the system correct. Read through it before you attempt any adjustments. It is step by step, and is quite reasonable to do.
