Cibie Pallas Lamp Placement
I am nearly done with the refurb of my lamps - pods painted and all mounting hardware yellow zinc coated or powder coated as appropriate.
My question - does anyone have measurements of where exactly the lamps mount on the front trunk - they look in most photos to be pretty much level at their centre point with the headlamps. Ian |
This might be more than you want to know, but here is an incredible colection of pics of 911's , ... many with the hood lights you mention.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/330691-here-some-random-911-pictures.html Placement is indeed close to what you say...but I've seen it range from top's being at equal height ..... to centers being equal....to bottoms being equal height. Some variation side-by-side too. The pics should establish the most common placement, as some of these pics are period correct. |
Your timing is excellent Ian.
Someone just sent me this this morning:D Hope it helps you... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1186192046.jpg |

Cameron - great picture - saved it.
Do you know if those measurements are for center alignment ? Will - great link - I think I am looking to do center for now. I will mock up and take photos before deciding - all I have to do then is drill holes in my rust free hood :) Ian |
There is no 'factory' location of these, since they were not originally designed for the 911 anyway. They were/are mounted in widely varying locations. The slope of the hood will roughly dictate how far up the hood you mount them since the mounting surface of the lights has a fixed angle. Coincidently, this will align the horizontal centerline of the Cibie's closely with the centerline of the headlights.
Ideally, you want the lights spread apart as far as possible to avoid overlap of the illumination pattern. Using Cam's diagram, I set mine at 112mm and 265mm. There are mounting plates that are placed under the hood, so you need to check for interference with the frame of the hood. In my install, I slid the plates under the frame slightly. Also, I fab'd up a thick aluminum plate & gasket to raise the lights slightly off the hood surface to allow clearance for the ring tab. Some guys cut the tab off and mount them flush. Tip: measure 4 times, drill once :D http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1186346260.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1186346343.jpg |
RS with Cibies installed when new at factory. Myselves I would have mounted them futher towards the front.

This is the '69 factory rally team leaving for Monte Carlo. They mounted them on these cars quite close together, just inside the line of the hood creases. Probably so the illumination pattern cleared the horn grill-mounted lights.

Zithlord - I agree, the aligned at the top doesn't look to me quite as neat as the through the center.
Just waiting for my refurbished lamp holders to come back to me (I have the painted pods), so I can re-assemble and mock up for photos. Great pictures all - thanks. Ian |
