Big Oil Problem
I have a 1977 911s 2.7. The other day after it warmed up a little it pumped about a quart of oil out the breather into the air box.
I cleaned it all up let the car sit for a day and then warmed it up while watching. At about 170 -180 it did the same thing as well oil was leaking out from under the center of the drive train motor area. Possibly coming down from above Motor has been running great no issues. Any thoughts? |

Your oil system is overfull. When it is warm you need to suck/drain some oil from the tank to get it below the top mark on the dipstick.

Did you or someone else recently do an oil change or a top up?

Think so?
The oil was done in the spring , no oil added in 2 months, but problem just started the other day. |

+1 Andy's advice.
Welcome to the board, and welcome to the "odd" Porsche 911 way of checking oil. Check only when engine is warmed up, at idle, and on a flat surface. Fill to middle of marks on dipstick. Use the gauge only as a relative measure once you've set the oil level by the dipstick. BTW, the gauge is only useful at warm/idle also so don't be fooled by low readings while driving. Edit: just saw your last post before I could post this. If no oil has been added in 2 mos., then something else seems amiss though your symptoms are classic over fill. Could be excessive back pressure or some obstruction in a breather hose. Also, I assumed when you said oil was coming out the breather (hose) you meant the breather from the tank. Was the oil coming from the breather hose to the crankcase?

There was oil from the tank to the air box breather.
But there was also some oil that came from the back of the motor, towards from of car, however you want to look at it. So that might mean crank breather as well. Ths ran out the bottom. |

Just to clarify, once the oil is spilled, does the flow to the breather box stop or have you just shut down the engine? I'm asking because I wonder if you can get an accurate reading from your dipstick now. From you initial post, a quart of oil is a lot, and if that amount happened twice, you are pumping a good quantity of oil out the tank. If you cannot idle the engine warm without pumping out oil, I'd suggest draining the system, check all hoses and lines for obstructions, and refill with a known quantity of oil that is well within limits, say 9.5 qts., and try again.
edit: one other question, do you have an external oil cooling system on your car?

It pumps the oil out then stops, it is not a constant flow.
I will drain and check for problems. I checked th oil level and it is high, like really high. I discounted oil level at first and did not check as i am the only that drive the car or adds oil. I did just drain about 2 qrts from the car and re check my test and i could not get it to pump out oil. I think my problem really lies with my 3 teenage boys and me finding a better place to hide the keys. Maybe on a joy ride when it heated up they saw the oil pressure drop and added oil. No one is fessing up to the crime at the moment. I will still check lines though. Thanks for the help with my nervous knee jerk post. |

Sounds like time for someone to 'fess up. Maybe they checked the oil when cold and added the 2 qts it showed low.

It's just good to hear the problem is solved! Mistakes through miscommunication are not uncommon and this time, fortunately, it was just messy and not fatal.
Three teenage boys,eh? Maybe it's time to invest in a hidden "kill switch" (for the Porsche, that is...)
