Oil level gauge stuck on bottom

1974 911 targa. My oil level gauge is stuck on the bottom, when i remove the wire from the center of the sending unit the gauge goes all the way up.I ordered a new sending unit from pelican, installed it with the same problem. When i have the sending unit removed from the oil tank and connect both wire the gauge works fine. As soon as i put the sending unit back in the tank and connect both wires, the gauge stays at the bottom. It seems like i might have a ground issue.I have the oil tank full on the dip stick at 180.If anybody has any input i would appreciate it , thanks

If you have the wires reversed, it will do this.

The sender is just a variable resistor, that varies the amount of ground path for the gauge. So if the wire from the gauge is touching direct ground for any reason, the gauge will be stuck at the bottom.

If it is not touching anything, the resistance is infinite, and the gauge pegs full.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for your help. I had the wires crossed, the gauge now works fine.

Thank you
