losing oil under pressure

Hi guys... got a new issue that has my car grounded. It's been oil leak free for many months, following RSR seal installation. On the way home the other day, I started throwing oil up on the car behind me in traffic while at speed. No smoke, no loss of power, only slight clicking that sounds like a valve needing adjustment. When I got home, I crawled under it and the right rear was soaked with oil. The inside of my right rear wheel had oil in it.. which was how it was getting thrown up on the car behind me. There was so much, I couldn't see where it was coming from.. so I cleaned it up real good. Removed my lower right cover to see if everything looked okay... it did. Fired it up... no leak. Let it idle for 15 or 20 minutes while under the car... not a drop of oil anywhere. I took it up the road for 5 minutes and back... oil everywhere again. I had my wife rev it to about 3k and I could see alot coming out from the rear facing side of the engine, between the upper and lower covers, about where the engine tin starts. My oil pressure guage oscillates up and down while this is happening. I can watch it squirt out in quantity when the engine is revved. It's close to the chain tensioner oil fitting... the elbow. What kind of mess do I have on my hands here?

Thanks.

-Troy

Dripping from this area?

Not the circled nyloc nut, the other circle. If so, it may be leaking from in between the chain boxes and engine. That was my problem. I traded cars with a friend one day and as I drove behind my car, I could see a stream of oil coming out of the right side. All fixed and no leaks at all.

Looking for help re: my chains and more

Dave

You will need to clean things up again and start checking lines and fittings. If it is under pressure and it is leaking that bad it should be easy to spot. May be the cam or tensioner oil line or fittings. Tighten the fittings and/or replace the sealing washers. They can leak and the metal part can get fatigued and crack over time. Replacement lines both solid and flexible and sealing washers are readily available from our host. If you have a/c you may need to remove the compressor and mount to get a better look. You can do so without opening the a/c system. Let us know what you find.

Dave... yes close, my leak looks to be just above where you have it circled... closer to the engine tin.

Ed, yes I did suspect the tensioner fitting. Does this fitting have oil pressure on it? My oil pressure guage has never fluctuated much in the past... but definitely does now. I do have a/c and will definitely have to get the compressor out of the way to see better.

Thanks for the comments guys... I'll clean it all up and pull the tensioner fitting and replace those parts. Hopefully that'll be all it is. I was really dreading your comments... thinking that I was looking at a something really severe. I'll post back my findings.

My uneducated guess is that one of the banjo bolts (do they call them that on german cars) is loose on the chain tensioner piping. May just need to be tightened up. Yes of course it has oil pressure, that's why it works as a chain tensioner. There pipes, you may not have to replace, just tighten.

The lines to the tensioner have been known to break. There is a bracket attachment upgrade to prevent the breaking.

Okay then... the consensus is definitely the chain tensioner fitting, which I believe is called a banjo fitting. Maybe it is just loose. I'll check it... if it's tight, I'll go ahead and pull it for inspection.

All of you have been a big help... thanks for the comments.
