Puff of blue smoke on startup after sitting - normal?
Hi,
I'm looking at a 1987 911/ 3.2 G50 to purchase. It has 122,000 miles and has service history since 1992. It has had regular valve adjustments, oil changes, and things like distributor cap change, replacement of camshaft o-rings and gaskets and misc other things, but no top-end or valve guide replacement. The owner says that after it sits a long time and he starts it, he gets a puff of blue smoke. But not when its warm. Is this normal? or does this indicate an upcoming top-end (I don't want a bill for 10k soon if I can help it). BTW the owner says that all 911's do this. Thanks Marvin

It is normal however it is also advisable to get a compression and leakdown test with any engine. Usually valve seals will let a bit of oil through when tired so you get the smoke until they warm up. If it checks out with compression and leakdown then I would say you are pretty safe.

I also emailed the guy again and he re-iterated that it sometimes smoke on startup,
but no always, and that a rebuild may be about 40-60k out yet: "The car [87 3.2/G50] does smoke on start-up when it has been sitting for a while. This does not always happen. I had a '77 911S where it happened every morning. When I had the PPI done at Kahler's, I asked Denny Kahler about the need for a top end rebuild and if he thought it would be required. He thought I could probably get 40-60K more miles on the car before it became necessary." I will definately get a leakdown & compression test if I pursue this car to see how it is doing.

If my car sits for more than 4 days it blows some smoke at startup. The engine was rebuilt less than 15k miles ago. My guess is that oil seeps into those horizontal cylinders when sitting long enough.

If you can get a truthful answer, the oil consumption is not a bad indicator of overall engine health.
