Paging All 915 Guru's..Can't Get 5th Gear to Engage

I recently replaced 1st and 2nd Gear Syncros in my 915 Tranny. Put everything back by the book and tested before reinstalling. Finally got the car back together this AM and it will now not shift into 5th....I have adjusted the coupler per JW's instructions. 1st through 4th, as well as rev shift like butter, but I can't get it into 5th....This is really driving me nutts after 3 weeks of weekend work....I have not tried to force it into 5th yet, but I am almost at the point of trying before I have to drop that darn engine back out...Where did I go wrong? What are the potential reasons why it will not go into 5th??? Please help!!!

Did you bench shift it before installing? If not remove the shaft off the coupler and grab the coupler to manually shift it. This will may tell you if the problem is in the shift linkage or in the trans.

I just read all of your thread and see that you were able to get 5th (with adjustments) but then lost 1 & 2. Have you disassembled and inspected the shifter and bushings? How are the coupler bushings?

I adjusted the couple and thought I was getting 5th, but actually only move the problem and was only really getting 3rd.

Missing 5th Gear.....

Blk95993,

Could you shift it into reverse? Are you doing your gear shifting at static or motor/car running?

I can shift into rev. I have not tried to shift into 5th while the car was moving yet due to the fact I could not get it to engage while static.
