Engine Serial Number Help

I have a '69 911E engine that I'm trying to find the serial number on.

To the right of the alternator/fan is this number: 901/09. According to Brett Johnson's authenticity guide it should have a serial number in the 6290001-6292270 range.

The number below the 901/09 is 19692. I thought that was where the serial number should be? Am I looking in the wrong location?

Thanks in advance!
Jon

Serial number is stamped on the vertical support casting for the fan housing, and has * before and after the numbers, if original factory stamping.

Thanks! I was looking in the wrong place...

I had a similiar question and got this reply from a fellow Pelican:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

B-program "E" engines had #`s that started with 6190001-6192455 except sportos__________________

I expected all E engines to start with 62xxxxxx. Learn something new everyday!

tonythetarga 08-07-2007 06:12 PM

1969 T engines started with 6190001 with webbers. the 901/09 E with mfi starts with 6290001. sporto engines had different designations (901/13; 901/19; 901/11; 901/04)
The 1970 E engines (911/01) started with 62000001.

911quest 08-07-2007 06:59 PM

The 68 911L also used a 901/09 it was for all intensive purposes the L and the E shared the same motor except induction.

Check this thread, briefly, if you will. Don't want to start any controversy but is this possible?

I don't know what B program means. The Stoddard reference material I have shows T's with the 619xxxx numbers for 1969; the E's started with 629xxxx; The S had a 639xxxx.
In 1970 the E starts 6200001
1971 E starts with 6210001
1972 E 6220001
1973 E 6230001

Could and probably is a T case built to E specs, which means in 1969 the T had 110 hp @ 5800 rpm with 8.6:1 compression ratio and the E had 140 @ 6500 rpm with a 9.9:1 CR.

I guess that one should go on the dyno during the PPI to verify what it has for ponies.

1969 911E

Engine Type: 901/09 for 911E with standard transmission, 901/11 for 911E with Sportomatic transmission.

901/09 911E engine numbers: 6290001 – 6292270.
901/11 911E engine numbers: 6298001 – 6298583.

‘69 911E VIN read 1192Yxxxx where:
11 = 911 model
9 = 1969 Model year
2 = Type 911E
Y = 0 for Porsche coupe
Y = 1 for Targa
Y = 2 for Karmann coupe
xxxx = sequential serial number.

To correct above, there was not a ’68 model 901/09 engine. The engine choices for a ’68 911L were 901/06 (RoW standard transmission), 901/07 (RoW Sportomatic), 901/14 (USA standard transmission) and 901/17 (USA Sportomatic).

Source: Porsche Technical Specifications, 912, 911, 911T, 911L, 911S, 4203.20, 2 M IV/83.

The “A” body cars are ’68 model year, the “B” body cars are ’69, '72-'73 are "E", the '73 RS is "F", etc. This is not to be confused with the later MY designation, for example a 1980 model is an "A" year and 1986 model is a "G" year.

Grady

Sooooo....

Long story short, the ebay car has at the very least a T case, right? Something that probably should have been clearly disclosed.

Grady. not to disagree with you but the guy that started thethread had a 68L for sale with a 901/09 I just parted out a 68L with a 901/09 coincidence??
I know the red book shows a listing for a 901/09 as a 68L motor

I think having found two 901/09 engines in two ’68 911Ls is a coincidence.

The Red Book (Parernie, Patrick C., Porsche 911 Red Book 1965-1999,
MBI, 2000, Osceola, WI, USA) pages 13-17 does not show a 901/09 engine
for a ’68. On page 17 Parernie says “Type 901/09 fitted in 911E same as A
series 911L except for the following changes:….” Something is lost
in ‘translation’. He isn’t saying that a 901/09 was installed in a ’68 911L,
just the engines are similar.

The Porsche Databook, Motorbuch Verlag 2004, Albrecht
translation 2006; pp. 84-88 seems to agree.

Here are the Porsche Factory Spec Books:

For 1968 and earlier:

4203.20 2 M IV/83 (data agrees with version 1 M III/72 and
W 392-E-4000-10-68 M)

and for 1969:

4219.21, 1st English Edition, 3 M XII/71 M (data agrees with version
4210.20 1 M VIII/78)

I’m intending to be picky as these are important historical details about
our cars and need to be recorded correctly. All of the sources I listed
above (yes, rarely even the Factory Spec Books) contain errors. It is up
to us to make it clear. A century from now someone will be
researching this. God (and Wayne) willing, there will be the correct
information.

911quest, you and I know each other well enough to know I'm not
picking on you. Give me a call. You are now on the front lines of correct info.

Grady

One interesting point thou if these are 1969 "E" engines why don't they have MFI cams?

P.S. I know you are not picking on me

Good question.

You found two 901/09 engines without the MFI drive extension on the left (1-2-3) cam. I guess the question is; were the cams changed or modified or they original?

After almost 40 years almost anything is possible. Our mission here is to determine if something is original and unusual vs. a modification. This is not always easy with this era 911s as Porsche was changing things so fast during this time.

I wouldn’t put it past Porsche to sell a ’68 with a carbureted 901/09 or a ’69 using ’68 numbers. This is a year where Porsche KG was in turmoil in many respects, S/N included.

Grady

The one I had the case was to far gone to keep the motor was locked up water internally had ate thru the Mag case so I tossed it but the heads are date stamp 68 with no MFI ports altough the motor had been gone thru (reground crank) I beleve the cams to be originals they don;t have ant signs of being welded. The early 68 also had a smog pump
on the 1-3 cover correct?

Grady tried to send you a PM but your box is full

Side note to this thread. I emailed the seller of the eBay 69E regarding the engine number. He responded with thanks, investigated, and is relisting the car with mention of the engine mismatch.

"Well, after hours of web searching I found a site that had engine VIN's. According to that site you are right. I trusted the guy I bought it from. Seemed like a real nice guy. Maybe he didn't know either. I will add this to the listing and email the current bidders. Thanks for the catch. Shane"
