Fuel pump problem with sc?

Hello group....Today I had my sc in the A/C shop getting a new compressor. While they were working on the car, they had the ignition on without the motor running. It flooded so badly they couldn'd start it.They said that this shouldn't happen because the fuel pump should not work without the crank turning.I have never noticed this before as I have never had reason to have the ignition on without starting it up.Can you steer me in the right direction as to what could be causing this?
Cheers
Kevin

Running Fuel Pump.....

Kevin,

There is something wrong in your wiring system if the fuel pump keeps running with the ignition "ON" only and engine not running. The fuel pump is designed to run only when engine is running or air meter activated as a safety feature.

I suggest that you check your fuel pump relay first. Terminal #87a gets power from ignition switch @ ON position. Terminal #85 (ground) should be open when engine is not running and terminal #30 (power to FP) should not be energized too.

Do these tests:
1). Turn ignition switch 'ON' and pull out the FP relay from the socket.
2). Check if terminal #30 (@ FP socket) has power. There should be 'NONE'.
3). Check if terminal #85 (@ FP socket) for ground. There should be 'NONE'.
4). Install FP relay back and in your case the pump will run at this point. This will confirm that terminals 30 and 87a are bridged or shorted. Defective relay is the cause.
Let's see what you'll find out and good luck.

Tony

Let's break this down further:

1. Ignition on and fuel pump running when the engine isn't running should not happen. Check the microswitch at the throttle body and other diagnostics as recommended.

2. Flooding "so badly they couldn't start it." Huh? An SC shouldn't flood with the fuel pump running and the engine not running. You might have leaking injectors or something amiss with your fuel distributor. However, I should think your car would have shown some symptoms of this, such as driveability issues.

How good are these mechanics?

Thanks for your replies.I took it to my Porsche mechanic this morning and it turns out that the fuel pump has been hardwired by the previous owner.I don't know why someone would do this but it is getting fixed straight away. And Brian, these are not mechanics but only work on A/Cs.
