Brake Fluid Vent Tube

Can anyone tell me the proper routing, or prefered alternative routing, for the brake fluid vent tube on an SC? Is plugging the vent acceptable?

..Thanks...Tim

On my Carrera it runs down the left front fender line along with the windshield lines and drops out under the car. Block it off only when bleeding the brakes. However, many cars come w/o the vent line, but then again, many cars never get tossed around on the track! I believe it is more of an overflow line.

Don't plug the vent tube. It's for ..... venting and a dump path for excessive fluid in the reservoir (or when the BF gets hot - it expands).

Instead of routing the open end outside; it will surely drip onto a body panel where it will promptly remove paint, I'd point this into a container.

I connect my MC vent hose to this small gravity bleeder bottle from HF. This photo shows one used for brake bleeding:

I've also seen a plastic 35mm film canister used as a vent/dump can. Make sure it's vented (hole) to prevent a vacuum in the reservoir.

Sherwood - What type of hose are you using. I also have an overflow cannister, but the brake fluid keeps eating right through the vinyl tubing...

I took a length of clear Tygon tubing of the appropriate I.D., and I placed a shorter length of coat hanger inside. I then bent it into a loop and put a wad of cotton in one open end. I attached the other end to the MC vent nipple. The coat hanger retains the loop shape and the loop prevents fluid from getting out. The cotton allows air venting. So far it seems to work fine.

Grant,
Not sure about the hose material supplied with the bleeder bottle. I thought it was PVC, but the regular reservoir vent hose plugs right into the nipple of the bottle.

Sherwood - I just bought two of those over flow bottles ($5/ea from Harbor Freight) and put one on my brake reservoir and the second on my gearbox breather/overflow.

Thanks for the idea!

Hi Grant,
I hope that works for you. I found the bleeder bottle magnet okay for bleeding but pretty weak for keeping it in position. Adding a stronger button magnet to it helps keep the bottle in the position I want it.

Thanks - I added some zip ties in case the magnet didn't hold...
