Originally it was simply a hole. However Porsche received many complaints of customers sticking a finger in the hole just because and of course winding up with their finger getting stuck. So there was a recall and they revised it with the finger block you see.

O.k, o.k., just possibly it might be a air temperature sensor.

Its improperly installed; the slits should be vertical to minimize dust accumulation and concommitant weight gain (which can be significant in the South West).

What ever you do, DO NOT tape over the slits!! (ask me how I know).

Yeah I have a little hole like that to the right of the steering column on my 79 but nothing covering it. I wondered what that was too. So your saying not to put my finger in there though???

On "84" and "85's" the "Passenger Compartment Temperature Sensor" is located between the sun visors on the headliner. It looks like a rubber nipple. I've thought about moving the sensor to the later location because the rubber nipple looks bad, a real after thought. I haven't talked to anyone yet who knows if this can be done. Probably more than you wanted to know...

It is actually a port that leads to the interior temp sensor on cars equipped with the auto heat control : You know the little mousetrap mechanism that moves the heater lever up and down for you since you are sooo busy driving in cold weather.
The sensor used to be located between the sunvisors on earlier models starting with the 911 turbo in 77

It's the auxiliary air inlet vent for the aftermarket cool collar.

I believe that is a head light stalk smoke diverter. Instead of the smoke rising in front of the driver, blocking there vision, it is moved to a safer location. A very high end feature. After all it is a Porsche
