Years ago my 240Z wouldn't start after being parked in heavy rain for hours. It had good spark and pumped gas. I called my mech. at home (I was stranded at my office on a Sunday afternoon) and he told me to put the dist. cap in a warm oven. The cap looked and felt completely dry, inside & out, but damned if 10 min. at low heat didn't dry out the unseen moisture and the car fired up immediately.

I bought a new cap next day. Apparently they get somewhat porous with age and can retain enough moisture to become inoperable.
