sorry the link is at the bottom of the passage.

Sports Cars
911 to Cayenne: Eat my dust

A Porsche Carrera Safari replica was running in second place overall in the Transsyberia Rallye as of this writing
A 4,414-mile jaunt from Moscow to the capital of Mongolia, the Transsyberia Rallye is one of the world’s most grueling challenges for cars and their drivers. It’s the sort of place you might expect to find factory-prepared Porsche Cayennes, Mercedes G- and M-Class diesels and the occasional Toyota Land Cruiser. So what’s a 32-year-old Porsche 911 doing here?

It’s not just any Porsche 911, of course – it’s a replica of a Porsche Carrera Safari, built from the body of a 1975 911 by Erik Bradenburg, a physician from Hamburg, Germany, who runs Dr. Brandenburg Racing, and has successfully competed in rallies around the world. Not only is the 911 still in the running after bigger machinery has dropped out, but Brandenburg and his co-driver, Stefan Preuss, were in second place as of this writing, four minutes behind the leading Land Cruiser.

“I'm optimistic that our car can last the distance to Ulaanbaatar [the Mongolian capital],” said Brandenburg. “With the virtually indestructible 3.2-liter engine delivering 265 horsepower and with a weight of just 1,065 kilograms (about 2,350 pounds), every meter in this car is pure fun.”

Thirty-three teams set out on August 3 from Moscow’s Red Square, but two have been knocked out of the running. The fourteenth and final leg of the rally is scheduled to end in Ulaanbaatar on August 17. Follow all the action at www.transsyberiaralley.com.

I see a Cayenne with Rod Millen and Richard Kelsey is second. I remember Millen as a rally driver when I was just a pup.

It would be embarassing if a Porsche didn't win with so many Cayennes in the race. 26 of 33 entrants are Cayennes. Think it would be cool if the Carrera took it. It probably weighs 1000# less than any other entry......but my money is on the Millen/Kelsey team.

Hey imcarthur, you picked the same picture I did. Others were getting stuck in this same spot.

I read last week that the Safari 911 was one of the few vehicles to make it across that water crossing. Several of the Cayennes didn't ....

Hey Lincoln - you going to the Woodward Dream Cruise Fri night? PM me if so.

Coll 911 - I grabbed all the shots I could for my library. I consider myself a rally fan of high order, although I rarely get to enjoy the sport now that Speed stopped carrying the FIA series. I guess one day I shold make it out to the bush to see the boys at work, but you know it's not the same watching as it is driving.

Intersting that they say this in the rules:

What types of vehicles are permitted?

The rally is open exclusively to 4WD vehicles (up to 3.5t gross vehicle weight) and trucks (over 3.6t gross vehicle weight). Technical modifications are allowed, provided they improve safety, reliability or ease of maintenance. Vehicles must be street legal (MOT approved). Temporary registration plates are not allowed.

So is the 911 fitted with a 4WD from 964 or 993?

Not necessarily. Rally 911s from the '80s, such as the 953, were fitted with 4WD...in typical Porsche fashion, the racing development eventually trickled down into production road cars with the 964 Carrera 4, etc..

"Brandenburg: "The car couldn't get through the water during two river crossings. It was 6.6 feet deep, but I still tried! The 911 was too light, and simply floated. Then it sank! Only the shovels on the roof were visible, so we were better off to leave the car. A unimog pulled us out, and after 3 minutes the 'sow' was running again." "

Millen and Kelsey won it in a Cayenne. The rest of the story is not in yet. I don't know what happened to the Carerra.

Here is a quote on the final day. Guess a little problems while crossing a river...

They must have had a heck of a budget to fit a 953/959 4WD then...
