1986 951 Sunroof not working, help?

1986 951 Sunroof not working, help?

About a year or two ago, I had the car repaired at an auto body shop. Just before they finished, there was a heavy rain that caused major flooding in the area. Apparently, the body shop left the windows open during part of that rain and water came into the car.

The body shop stripped everything out and completely dried the car out and put it back in shape.

Shortly thereafter, the power sunroof stopped working properly. Though I could never determine if this was caused by the rain water.

My mechanic looked at this problem and recommended I leave it alone due to probable high costs to repair, plus I would need to find someone with experience to do the repair.

Apparently, there is still some response from the electrical mechanism allowing us to open or lock the roof.

1. Has anyone had this problem?

2. What did you do? What were the costs?

3. Does the whole system need to be replaced? ( I don’t think this is just the plastic “gear” issue)

4. What more info would you need to give me proper advice?

5. Where else should I go to get opinions and costs for repair of this?

Thanks all, again.

You should probably post this in the 944 forum to get more responses. FWIW, I had one of these ('86 951) and loved it, however, the sunroof was "problematic" once I got mine rel-atched I just left it alone.

Good luck,

There is a plastic gear that is a common failure point in late 944 sunroofs. The guys in the 944 forum can tell you all about it.
