Cracked 915 Drain Plug

I cracked the drain plug on my 915 trying to remove it a few days ago and the 17mm hex fitting is of little use now because the female end is flared. Is there an easy remedy or will I need to get a piece welded on to get a grip?

Makes me want a lift. I hate working under jackstands.

I'm sure I'm not the first, but I didn't see anything in a search.

thanx

I wouldn't try anything but welding another piece on...Fact is these bastards are on tight, and there aren't a lot of tricks that would work effectively if you already flared the plug.

I would recommend removing the fill plug first if you haven't already, that way you're not up poop creek if you crack that one with the tranny already drained...

Never-Seeze on the replacement plug...but you've probably already thought of that one.

Put some valve lapping compound on the allen bit, this will give you the grip you need to remove it, or drill a hole in the center of it and use a large ez-out to remove the plug

Or put a piece of trimmed shim stock (your choice of thickness) into the hex hole and hammer in your hex allen socket. or wrap said shim stock around your hex allen socket and work into place.
Remove drain plug.
Replace with new drain plug.
Do not over torque.

When replacing it, I would recomed what I did, which was to go to an early plug that has an external hex instead of the internal hex.

OK ED...I've posted this many times before...just WHERE can you find such a plug that has a tapered 22 mm thread......looked forever at all kinds of places for this....as an archive search will show.

Inquiring minds want to know !!!

Tapered thread as in pipe thread? I don't think so. I think the al. washer provides the necessary sealing, not the threads. Normal corrosion, heat and galvanic action supplies the remainder of the sticktion.

It's been a while since I've dealt with the tank drain plug. Years ago, I replaced it with a Fumoto ball-valve. I recommend its use.

EDit: My bad. My thoughts were somehow on the oil tank, not the gearbox.

I was wondering if there was an 'outie' version . . .

I've got the car gong to the wrench this week and I think I'll just wimp out and add this to the list.

I think finding an "outie" has taken on "urban legend" status. Though many people have asked about one to fit the 915, I haven't heard of any sources.

Yes they do exist. My tranny has two of them. They look like this (picture was "borrowed" from a fellow Pelican):

BTW-This is a bad news picture - note the dog tooth.

Here are a couple of part numbers. The first is the top fill plug the second is the bottom drain plug with magnet.

I just checked in the garage. I have 4 915's all of the mag case transmissions have the outty version, the alluminum case trans has the inny (my race trans is a 85 915 with early outty plugs)

For those of you with "outties," did you purchase them recently or have they been on your cars for awhile? My understanding is that the outties did exist at one time, but that they're NLA at this point.

I have a bunch of extra case parts, so I looked through them and it looks like I have two spare sets of plugs if anyone would like to make an offer.

Thanks

Ed

Dan: Given all of the comments over time about the Porsche parts being "innies," at this point I have to believe that the outties are NLA from Porsche, Pelican, etc.
