wandering idle

After about 45 minutes of driving the idle speed (1980 SC) starts to creep up from an initial 900 rpms to 1200 - 1600. If I stop slowly and leave the clutch engaged, It will sink back to about 1000 but if I stop suddenly and depress the clutch quickly the idle will stay up at the higher rpms. What might the problem be?
