911 E headlight relay

Hi everyone...I just joined here and it's a great site. I have a 71 911E and I have bought many parts from Pelican Parts for it. I bought better headlights for the car and a better relay also. Do you guys know where it is located on the car? I looked under the dash but didn't see it under there. Thanks!

stock = no realy -- you have to wire it in

did you get a round one or the square ones with wires? The latter is made by Marc Sucro as a kit and should have instructions.

otherwise, it's roll your own (or search the bbs for how to's)

Here it is here.... the first one....

http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/911E/POR_911E_ELlite_pg1.htm#item2

On the electrical diagram for 1971 Porsche 911s on Pelican Parts it shows a headlight relay. The relay is square.

Thanks for your help.

Anthony,

My '73 has a factory relay in the headlamp CONTROL Circuit but this is before all the power goes through the flasher stalk. You should install a sepaate set of relays to direct the high current from the battery directly to the headlamp filaments using your existing circuit to control the new relay coils.

The relay you are refering to is located behind the instrument cluster and is in the trunk. This relay is item #50 in the 1971 (part1) electrical diagram which you can see here: http://www.pelicanparts.com/911/911_Parts/Electrical/911_electrical_1971_Part-1.jpg

Anthony,

If you have higher than styandard wattage lhead lamps, do not delay, it is a real PITA to repalce the flasher switch. At close to $200 for the part, do you really want to have to buy one when the cost to install relays is under $50? Even with stock headlamps the current draw will kill your switch.

BTW, it is customary for new guys to post a picture (or two) of their car. Showing off is not bad form.

So you guys are saying..along with replacing the relay....install some seperate relays too very soon? The bulbs I bought a 80/100 watts.

I'll have to get a picture of it....if it ever stops raining here so I can get a nice picture, because I just moved all of the pictures off of my computer because of techinal reasons with the computer. I'll get one or two up soon.

Thanks!

Yes, please do it as soon as you can. The high wattage bulbs you have put a tremdendous load on your turn signal stalk.

BTW, it is very helpful to include your location and your car info so we can help you better in the future.
