Auto fuel sender recalibration

How weird is this.... my fuel gauge has always read wrong. Goes from 4/4 to 0/4 in 180 miles & all I can fit in is 10 gallons. I usually squeek out another 40 miles before filling up.

Anyway, the low fuel light comes on two weeks ago and I run out of fuel on the way to work. Dial AAA and get to the job an hour late. Put 16 gallons in and away I go. Funny thing is, I now get 150 miles on the odo and the gauge reads just below 2/4. Done that 4 times after 4 refuels. What are the chances of having a fuel sender that has automatic recalibration built in?
