Cricket Noise from Engine?

I went for a short drive and when I returned I noticed a ticking sound in the engine compartment when the car was at a full stop. I turned off the car and went in to get my recorder and returned in about 1/2 hour. I started the car and the ticking was gone...but there was a chirping / cricket noise there. I took the car for a drive to see if the ticking would return once the engine temp. increased but no luck. Just the same cricket noise.

Here's a link to the sound of the engine...

I have searched around a bit and found similar problems that ranged from broken valve springs, valve guides, valve adjustment required and broken head studs among others. I am not sure the sound from the WAV file above helps at all but any comments would be welcome. The clapping at the end of the sound clip was not supposed to be there but I was having more trouble editing it out that it was worth!

have you tried removing the fan belt and running the car for a few secconds to see if it goes away? this could indicate a bad alternator bearing which could cause a squeeking sort of sound when the car is running. also, while it is off try spinning it by hand to see if it is rubbing in the housing somewhere. might be something else but that is much easier to check than valve springs and headstuds.
best,
felix
