Use the search function...I remember seeing some posts on removing paint from targa bars in the past. Seems to be fairly straight forward.
Check these out: Targa bar cover - To blast or not to blast? Question for those who've refinished their own Targa bar... Good luck.

You will find that removing and reinstalling the targa glass is a major hassle. I am in the same boat; my 72 was the victim of a black-out updating project in the late 1980s and I also need to change the targa bar back to the stainless appearance. I am going to do it without removing anything from the car, unless I run across the items needed to convert the car to the soft rear window.

The rear window glass is anything but fragile. Short of dropping it on a concrete floor, it's tough to break. Volkstuning, if all you're doing is removing the Targa bar cover for polishing back to original, you'll not be getting into the rear window at all. Brian |

For those who did remove and repaint their Targa bar skin, did you replace/require any parts during the removal/replacement? Sounds like a good time to replace the rear seal, and I was wondering about the read (above the rear glass) piece of black rubber/plastic around the skin; did this need to be replaced?
Thanks in advance.

I am sort of in the same boat, my targa bar was blacked out, I stripped it and found that it had a lot of hail damage and putty before paint. So it is useless to try to restore. But I have a later model bar that was originally painted, I have it stripped, but it was never polished and or brushed. Does anyone have any ideas how to give it an original appearance? From what I can tell they look like they were polished then brushed? Tips or advice anyone?

Welcome to the forum and yet another European member!
Estepona! I have spent many a Christmas and Easter in Nueva Andalucia/Puerto Banus the last twenty years! I really envy your climate and the road surfaces are so smooth. Never driven a Porsche there, must be great. Well, honestly, last time, a year ago, I found the main road going west from Puerto Banus had really started to crumble from all the traffic. ![]()

I think your approach should be to remove the cover from the car and use paint stripper to remove the paint.
Then start with a 400 grit sand paper and sand lengthwise to get the brushed appearance you are looking for, if the scratches look to big just switch to a finer grade of paper or use steel wool until it looks brushed. Once sanded you could probably finish it up with a acrylic satin clear-coat, you should test the clearcoat first to see how it reacts with the metal. I haven't tried this but have been considering it. Or you could polish it using a buffing wheel and rubbing compound then it would be smooth and shiny.....Ive never seen that done, it would probably be original.

Hi
The hoop is held on by 4 bolts under the wheel arch, up high next to the door slam pannel. There are also 12 or so screws that hold it in place under the rubber seal. Take this lot off and just pull and wriggle it off. Paul

okay guys success the trim is now in the rubber and all is back on the car, i cant really add anything that will make the job easier for any body else apart from the following:
its not a 5 minute job, so do it when you have no urgent appointment's or have to be somewhere, it takes patience try and get some extra hands as this helps keep the trim in place and balance the screen as you push the trim in and try to make sure the rubber does not come of start at the corner of the seal, and work you way back to-wards the rear of the seal or the center where the clip will be fitted at the join, its a longer distance before you have to start shaping the trim to the curve and it does not pop out put the rubber on the screen and then fit the trim and the put screen into position again as many hands as poss here to apply pressure and again stop the trim popping out, we finally got it done after 4 hours and it was worth it, even the glass fitter admitted afterwords that it looked great and was worth the effort, and now ladies and gentleman for my next problem, how do you remove the dashboard top?????? since this needs to be replaced or trimmed we want to this before replacing the front windsceen again all help and advise welcome, i have found taken out all the screws along the front lip and have gentle leaver the the dashboard away but it seems to be held down in other places, does the glove box and gages have to come out????? thanks again for all the post |
