Catalytic converter confusion
I want to retain my catalytic converter for easy compliance with emission testing. My car has 120k miles and is running well but I feel that my cat must be at least partially clogged so I would like to replace it with either a new or lower mile part. I see that there are aftermarket cats available but I prefer to stay with the Porsche OEM part. This is where the confusion comes in.
I have checked the Porsche parts catalog for 1984-89 cars and 3 different part nos. are shown for various years. They are: 930 113 230 09 930 113 230 15 930 113 230 25 My question is...are these interchangeable? Will they all fit and work properly on my '87 car and, if so, is one preferred?

Depends on the engine serial number.
930 113 230 15 < 64H 06010 < 64H 05727 930 113 230 25 64H 06011 > 64H 05728 >

You may want to consider buying a used one from a low miles 87-88 Carrera. My 87 failed emissions in Ontario and passed the MA test after I did the above. Good luck!

Chuck,
As an aside, if your car had a valid and in force IL emissions test status as of 2-1-07, you no longer have to go through emissions testing. IL recently amended their emissions law, essentially waiving emissions testing for all pre-OBD II ('95 and earlier) cars with a current valid emissions test on file. (http://www.epa.state.il.us/air/vim/index.html) That being said, replace the cat if you like, but I'd recommend replacing it with a Euro pre-muffler instead. Tim |

Thanks for the input and advice. I did see the serial number ranges in the parts catalog but didn't realize that they were referring to the engine. I'm not sure why there are two ranges shown that seem to conflict though.
My question now is....Has anyone had experience, good or bad, in switching an OEM catalytic converter from one year to another, say 1984 to 1987? My original plan was to find a good low mile used cat but I was also considering going to the European premuffler which seems to get mostly favorable reviews. Whichever route I go, I want to wind up with a noticeable improvement in performance, even small, without spending big dollars. Since my car is running very well, the most logical option is to do nothing but I have violated the "if it's not broken, don't fix it" rule in the past many times with other cars and chances are I will again.
