$800 axle mistake? Help!
May have screwed up on this one. My car came with a 69T trans and in my (in)finite wisdom, I decided to buy a 2nd trans for rebuild The trans I bought is from a 68L. Will the axles from the 69 trans bolt up to the 68 trans? I read they might be different. Thanks

69 was a one year only trans, different altogether from a 68 and earlier one. notice the different thicknesses of the intermediate plates.

Meaning my axle/cv package from the 69 is not going to work on my rebuilt 68 trans?
|
Isn't the only real difference the stub axles?

:)

Now I'm confused also. Are you saying, John, that his axles won't interchange?

68 and earlier drive flanges are small diameter and the shaft that slides into the diff is longer than '69. the '69 also has large diameter flanges and joints.

Guys,
I'm off to help Pelican speedo with his 901 & 911 transmissions. I'll post here this evening or tomorrow. This can be a very complicated subject. It is not well documented and perhaps your project can help. It may be the early '69 alu transmission (901/07) will accept the late'67 and '68 transmission axle flanges (with simplified differential). I think the late '69 mag case (901/13) will not. I know the '70-'71 911/01 will not. This is what has to be determined for sure. In '69 there are also some strainge combinations with a ZF LSD. There are some 'one-off' axle flan I have most of the ealier and later transmissions but not these two '69s. If someone can find me these, I'll buy them. All of my effort is to provide the material for two chapters (901 & 915) in a Porsche transmission book. The author could be Wayne after he recovers from babies at home or Bruce with building a house. Perhaps we could all three co-author a book. Best, Grady |
Thanks everyone- For now, I'm going low-tech and just shipping the old axles to the trans builder. They'll match them up and tell me if they fit. Yes or no, I'll post the specifics
