Alternator Upgrade Help...where are the Porsche Pros?
 

In an effort not to waste anyone's time but my own, I have searched and searched, and maybe like looking for a mop at Walmart, I overlooked it but I need alittle help with my alternator upgrade.

This is my first Porsche (cant wait to buy another one...), 1980 SC. I am replacing the old alternator and external regulator with a new unit from PP. I have looked at the upgrade article, and maybe I am over complicating this, but I have a few questions:

1. When you remove the external regulator, it sounds like you just unplug it, and leave the empty plug?

I have trimmed out the original air duct to accomodate the new alternator.

2. There were (5) sets of wires going to the original alternator, if I understand correctly, I clip the black wire so that it is no longer connected. I still have the following:
Blue wire
Group of Brown wires
Red wire
and lastly one extra large brown(?) wire.
I assume that the large brown (i think its brown), and the other group of brown wires will be run to the same contact point on the new alt.?

3. Now there are (3) possible contact points on the back of the new alternator, but they are not marked, is there a diagram I can look at to tell where each goes on the back of the alternator?

3. What about the red light of doom? Will I need to change the bulb? It looks like from the tech article I need to, but John @ PP told me I wouldn't need to.

Ha ha... So I see the diagram I was asking about in the tech article...glad that wasn't a snake, it would have got me for sure.

I still need some help on the other stuff...

#2: Don't clip the black wire -- tape it back to one of the other ones -- never know when you might want to reverse the upgrade. You gain nothing by clipping it.

#2: All the brown wires go the same contact.

#3: If the contacts are not marked (are you REALLY SURE?), then:
With a voltmeter, determine which one is a dead short to the alternator frame. That is where the brown wires go.
The red wire goes on the larger post of the two remaining.
The blue wire goes on the smaller of the remaining posts.

Second #3: You might, or might not, have to change the bulb. I did not need to when I did the same modification.
